MR BARBEQUE

Starring Lyndon Terracini as ‘Mr Barbeque’ and Members of the Queensland Orchestra

'His (Sean Mee) deft directorial hand teased out the flavors of each musical-textual image to give Terracini's genius the ability to slip in and out of the skin of each perspective on the male psyche." Patricia Kelly OPERA-OPERA May 2002

"Â…every element of Mr Barbeque having presented much to admire; Janis Balodis's script, Elena Kats-Chernin' s music, production, direction and Lyndon Terracini's solo baritone performance." James Harper COURIER MAIL Friday, April 12, 2002

"..Balodis's text reinforces the impression gained three years ago with Paul Grabowsky's The Mercenary: here is a librettist with a canny ear for music and an economic command of imagery that is a composer's dream." Vincent Plush THE AUSTRALIAN Friday April 12, 2002

Continuing a tradition of producing as well as presenting quality performing arts, Northern Rivers Performing Arts' (NORPA) latest offering is the new music theatre cabaret, 'Mr Barbeque'. Starring celebrated baritone, Lyndon Terracini as 'Mr Barbeque', this production premiered in Lismore in April this year to enthusiastic Northern Rivers audiences and positive critical reviews.

'Mr Barbeque' combines the talents and experience of some Australia's most distinguished artists. Terracini is joined in his 'backyard' by composer Elena Kats-Chernin and key members of The Queensland Orchestra. Written by Janis Balodis, facets of this 'everyman' are explored through a cycle of 12 songs. Relationships, the mysterious pink substance inside the sausage, zen and the male psyche are a few of the themes explored and set to the music of Kats-Chernin. 'It's like the seven ages of man to some extent' says Balodis, 'It's a number of ages of the male who thinks of himself as the legend in his own back yard, as most men do when they're near the barbecue.'

The Powerhouse Theatre stage will be transformed by designer Eamon D'Arcy, who was responsible for segments of the spectacular opening and closing ceremonies of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. Complete with lawn, paling fence and a full size barbecue centre piece, D'Arcy has created a visually spectacular setting for this music theatre cabaret.

'Mr Barbeque' is a funny and entertaining observation of the great Australian barbecue; the backyard barbecue being a metaphor for life. 'Mr Barbeque' is a wild man, unafraid of fat or fire, a hero in his own backyard, a suburban odyssey. A human story that is comical and whimsical, blessed by sunshine and impossible dreams of happiness.
