AddressParade Theatre
Jarrabin is the second Australian premiere to be staged by NIDA in the new, award-winning Parade Theatre.
Dorothy Hewett's play is the story of three generations of people who live in a small, Western Australian wheat-belt town, "twenty miles east of the rabbit-proof fence Â…at the arse end of the universe." It is a warm, funny, sad, compassionate and provocative view of Australian history from Gallipoli to Vietnam.
Dorothy Hewett is amongst Australia's foremost writers. Her plays, poetry, stories and autobiography have generated argument and controversy, hostility and even litigation. She has always been the one to challenge convention, deal with taboo subjects and happily ignore the rules of dramatic literature!
The Jarrabin Trilogy was written in 1996 as three connected, but self- contained plays. With Dorothy Hewett's approval and support, John Clark has adapted the trilogy into one play, with music composed and performed by Terence Clarke.
Sadly, Dorothy Hewett died the day before rehearsals commenced. Jarrabin is NIDA's tribute to a great Australian poet and playwright.
