France. 1348. The Black Death rampages across Europe killing all in itÂ’s path. The clergy have fled, the worldÂ’s been turned on itÂ’s head and death hangs in the air. Not much fun here. Wrong! Father Flote has been called by God to bring a smile to the face of the dying. Leading an ill-assorted troupe of clowns, blind jugglers, one-legged dancers, lustful nuns and stuttering stand-up comics, their bad jokes and bawdy skits are the best show since the Inquisition!

“God wants peacocks not ravens, bright stars not sad comets, red noses not black death. He wants joy.”

The pace is fast, the language a lively mix of historical and contemporary speech, the action exhaustingly physical – a comic ritual where everything is simultaneously tragic and ridiculous. British playwright Peter Barnes (Theatre: The Ruling Class, The Bewitched, Dreaming, Jubilee; TV: Merlin, Alice in Wonderland; Film: Enchanted April) unearths outrageous historical anecdotes, brought to life by earthy, smelly characters in this hilarious show.

The perfect vehicle for Hayman TheatreÂ’s ensemble style, Red Noses is big in every sense of the word with a cast of 30, a stunning set and costumes designed by Michelle Baginski, lighting designed by Karen Cook and an unforgettable cameo performance by Robert Faggetter.

Director Duncan Sharp is one of the most experienced directors of BarnesÂ’ work in Australia, with productions including LeonardoÂ’s Last Supper, Noonday Demons and The Real Long John Silver for Rough Magic Theatre and Last Things for Hayman Theatre. An associate lecturer in Performance Studies at Curtin University, the work of Barnes is also the subject of his post-graduate study at the WA Academy of Performing Arts.

BarnesÂ’ biting comic work, Red Noses, is a brilliant, life-affirming experience. Well, at least it provides a home for old jokes. YouÂ’ll die laughingÂ…
