The play is a story of a community living in a post apocalyptic society in a place known as Waknuk. Their Society consists of only the physically perfect. Animals and plants that do not conform are destroyed, and imperfect babies are placed at the border, to be looked after by the "Fringe" people, mutants who have been banished from Waknuk. However, not all differences are visible and not all those who should be are pure and perfect!
