WAAPA Music Theatre Audition
Sun, 19 Nov 2006, 08:22 pmHi all
I'm confused :S I have been preparing for my WAAPA MT audition by 'performing' my songs as if I were in a production of the musicals...one in particular with quite a bit of movement...using a chair etc. My friend told me today, however, that there is an X on the floor which you are supposed to stand on, and that - although you can move slightly - you are primarily to simply sing with expression.
Can anyone clear this up for me - particularly those with first-hand experience - because I am extremely confused...and worried :S
I feel like a bit strange asking this, but I will feel even more strange if I 'perform' my songs at my audition to some very confused auditioners that expect me to stand on an X.
Thanks :)

No sometimes age is no
No sometimes age is no indication, however in this case- what mature adult, after finishing an audition, remains at the venue, sitting on the coffee table in the middle of the waiting room in front of all the other applicants and says" I have a call back" whilst everyone else is nervous then she proceeds to 'blow her own horn' No doubt she has a mature voice or whatever else is mature but those actions are NOT. So you were there too??? Oh yes this audition was a soap opera
I dont profess to have maturity, I dont care.
So why does WAAPA give everyone the big speel about worldly experience and no one is taken directly out of school as they did this year at the auditon masterclass. A 14 year old can show perfomance maturity but that doesnt necessarily mean they are life experienced. The problem is with these young kids who have been cocooned all there life in MT, they get a taste of the outside world and are easliy influenced by the nasty things in society.
I hope this is not the case

Grommetik, please-----
Grommetik, please----- where the hell is your maturity-- how utterly stupid to respond to such crap on this site. Its people like you that keep stupid topics going cos others want to retaliate-- just as I am.
Leave it alone- we all have an opinion, not everyone agrees and this could go on and on for ever, just like the Brent Street one that lasted for months .
who cares who got in, who cares if shes a bitch, events in life happen for a reason. and individuals get sorted out.
You were rude to Ben, how is he to know, he only asked a question, just say sorry it confidential information. It amazes me how people are so rude.
Everyone get a life.

The fact that you people
The fact that you people spend the time on this site bitching and carrying on like 4 yr olds amazes me.
What the hell are you doing ?? Hello ??
Instead of sitting infront of a computer, whinging, maybe you guys should get out there and create your own work !
Lets face it, there ain't much here in Perth and untill you get of u'r asses and do something then how can you expect it to happen ? Auditions successfull or not !
Who cares what WAAPA or NIDA think ?? At the end of the day it's someones opinion !! Many peoples opinion ! So don't take it to heart !
And Good Luck to the "Adelaide Girl" - you no doubt did well at the audition :) Congrats

As a Wappa grad, i've been
As a Wappa grad, i've been though WAAPA auditions, I know the staff, i've seen many many many auditionees who are amazing not get in. 1st There are NO RULES when auditioning.. 2 contrasting songs can be 2 ballads if they contrast in period... belt/classical emotional range. etc This age debate is kinda annoying as well.. Disallusioned are u saying that the course should be filled with 25 year olds? The year will be made up of a mix of ages, experiences, vocal ranges, looks...And yes some people in the course have had a "charmed" life... others not so... The staff at Waapa atm know what they are doing... but they do make mistakes.. aka quota thing... ( oh my god they are human) it sound like to me that they were giving you encouragement!! It's a good thing!! I feel for this chick from SA, by the looks she's made some people very pissed off... trust me when i say that people at Waapa wont put up wiht an arrogant 1st year!! Neither will the staff! oh and BEN_dd a list will come to you via caberet club....well the president anyway.. if your part of the BA... Thanks and good luck to people auditioning next year!

Rather Humerous
Just thought I'd put my 2 cents worth:
Disillusioned's Comment::: "Hey she may be 17 who cares 17 or 18 still young , so there goes the WAAPA 'you need maturity and worldy experience" this is the the point I want to get across."
^As stated by others, age is not an indication of maturity- You still have 25+ year olds, grafitting and destroying property, and you have 17/18 year olds having desk jobs (such as my friend, who got paid to move and work for Sydney for next byte- australia's largest apple reseller.
Regarding the 'Quota' comment you stated, If The panel did say that, (obviously they didnt think you were up to the job) and instead of saying " you're not good enough", or "work on your voice a bit more or whatever" and try again...
The words used- well better words could have been used, but you obviously took it the wrong way...and are now making quite a fuss about it. Instead of posting how much Waapa is this, and waapa is that- why dont you sort out the "problem" with them....although I really dont think the problem is with waapa, but with yourself.
As for the South Australian girl. I'm sure the judges wouldn't be intimidated or influence by the girl's mother (coming from a top dancing school or whatever).
Despite rocking up on the wrong day, and the argument that takes place- in the end the judges felt SHE had the qualities needed to be able to handle the course.
If anything, all the squabbling you (Disillusioned) are doing, and going on about 'maturity' etc, shows the lack of maturity you possess, and shows the lack of ability to be able to move on.
You shouldn't be worried about what grounds one person got accepted to the course on- You should be concerned only with yourself, and how you as a performer can develop and make your self into a better performer and person...and if you concentrate and work on that- you will have a better chance of getting in....instead of bitching and moaning about the 'injustice' that you say occurred...
Thats all I have to say.

Make peace
Hey guys.
I auditioned this year for the MT course at WAAPA and didn't get in. I think, however, that there is a time for feeling upset, agrovated or even angry about such issues but at least for me there is a time, which personally has passed, that calls us to stop worrying about the past! In all seriousness, in order to not only "make it" in the profession of performing but to do YOUR BEST (which is always the best you can do) it all comes down to you. The weight is on your shoulders. Sure, there are always going to be variables that are, quite simply out of your control. What I am saying is that it is within mine and your control to eliminate these variables by first acknowledging them followed by not giving them any importance in your life. What I try to do (I say 'try' because believe me, I constantly screw it up or forget) is to do just that. By not granting such essentially peripheraln issues any gravity you deem them another meaningless fact in your life - in deed, they are facts but completely irrelevant ones (of which there are billions of others!).
So, let us all get over it and move on. In truth all we can do is this.
Time won't stop for us to catch up.

MT certificate
I was wondering how hard it is to get into certificate? I got in for 2007 and i'm not sure i deserved it. I worked hard but i'm not really that talented. I know they take 24 people and around 400 people try out for BA and certificate-but how many people are really up for certificate?
