Question

This may be a silly question to ask but I'm curious. Do the other states have awards ceremonies? Or is the Finnley's simply a WA thing? ~ Tari The Writer is a child forever listening at the keyhole of the adult world.

I know there's at least one

I know there's at least one awards ceremony here (Melbourne) for am, but none for pro. EDIT: Dope that I am, I forgot: we usually do have pro awards, but only for festivals. In SA

Over the last two or three years the Adelaide Theatre Guide has had an awards evening. We have for many years had something called the Ozcarts which is awarded by the Adelaide Advertisers critics but there's no ceremony, and the Messneger Newspaper also gives the "Light Year Awards" also no ceremony. The local pro's have an evening at a theatre where the Adelaide Critics Circle give awards. There is slight nod to amateur one or two awards. I don't actually approve all that much of award nights and probably wouldn't go if nominated. Is that all there is? Well if that's all there is my friend, then let's keep dancing. www.tonymoore.id.au

No - it isn't me

1. This is not my style 2. I wouldn't be so stupid as to say I had won in a category in which I am not nominated. I was really annoyed about this, but I guess I don't have a monopoly on the initials KS. If I post I always post as Kimberley.

Finleys

Firstly - congrats to all nominees. We might have our own opinions as to which should win, but as none of us, bar the judges, have seen all the shows, lets leave the decision up to them, shall we? Secondly - I am appalled that the ITA "invites" clubs to present excerpts from shows as the nights entertainment, but refuses to provide comps for those providing said entertainment. People are going back into rehearsal, for shows they have performed up to a year ago, to provide the ITA with on tap entertainment at no cost to the ITA, and they don't have the decency to give comps to the performers!!! I was "invited" to perform last year as part of the cast of Sweet Charity, and this was one of my reasons for declining. I think a comp is the LEAST that the performers should be given.

Moderation

I'm curious as to why KS's post "and the winners are" was moderated out. Why isn't someone allowed to post their view as to who they think should win?
Jodie HansenSun, 13 Jan 2008, 09:38 am

Interesting

I for one was unaware that the Finley's actually existed until someone mentioned them last year. I couldn't go due to performance committments, however probably wouldn't have gone anyway. Strangely I get just as nervous waiting for the winning verdict as I do before I go onstage to perform. I don't like seeing the disappointment in the other people's faces as the winner is announced. Since I've never been nominated (and probably never will be) I don't have to worry about feeling disappointment but really feel for the other people. My 2 cents worth..

Finleys

In reply to Jeff Hansen on free tickets for performers at 'The Finleys'

This is a recurring question/problem and has been discussed every year for as long as I can remember! One reason for not doing so is that the ITA has to pay heavily for the hire of the venue, last year it was somewhere in the region of $3K (The Treasurer will correct me if I'm wrong). There may be up to 100 performers for the whole evening and that would be a sizeable loss of revenue. As most people must be aware the ITA runs on' the smell of an oily rag'  (Where does that odd saying come from?)

I believe that some clubs do subsidise their performers. One compromise would be to allow those people who are performing heavily discounted tickets as they usually are able to see a good part of the evening's show. Probably not a good suggestion from one who does get a comp ticket- but $22 is pretty cheap by today's standards.

Perhaps someone will bring up the subject at the forthcoming AGM? Problem number one for the new committee????

jeffhansenSun, 13 Jan 2008, 11:28 am

comps

Thanks Norma. We discussed this at a recent (Melville) committee meeting, and I was informed that the reason comps aren't given was purely financial. Yes I'm also aware some clubs subsidise their performing members. It just irks me greatly. "We want you to come perform for us for free, but sorry, you can't see the rest of the show unless you pay $22 + BOCS fee(another bone of contention). Surely there must be a compromise that can be made. Is the night sold out? Are there spare seats available? Every theatre group in perth gives comps for shows, including to the ITA. And no, I don't wish to run for ITA committee so I can change things at that level. I'm busy enough on one theatre committee as it is. I guess I'll vote with my feet and remain disgruntled.......

Smell of an oily rag;

Smell of an oily rag; indication that a car uses very little petrol and is very economical. So the mere smell of an oil-based substance would get the car running, as opposed to filling it up with lots of petrol.
NormaSun, 13 Jan 2008, 11:46 am

Comps

Firstly I fully agree with you Jeff about the BOCS fee, it irritates the hell out of me and I have always been VERY vocal on that subject!!

As far as I am aware, performers have  been allowed to 'slip in' to spare seats (I can foresee the wrath of God coming down on my head for saying this)  after they have been on-stage.

And I wasn't actually suggesting that you run for the ITA committee but you can express your ideas/complaints etc at the AGM and any committee t will take them into consideration.

Comps

Jeff, I do empathise with your issues regarding performing at the Finley's and having to pay for a ticket. At times depending on where your performance is placed in the program you may miss more things than others which is not value for money. In saying that I am always chuffed to have the opportunity to perform again a show that was obviously liked by someone enough to get a gig at the Finleys. In defense of the ITA it is definitely an expensive evening to put on. But what is the answer? Maybe raising the cost of entering a Play or Musical? (Lets see who is serious!!) Or simply have an organising committee put together a show for the Finleys and not choose shows to perform an excerpt! This has been tried before and failed. While this current situation isn't ideal we should still support the ITA. What stance does your club have Jeff? What are they doing to help grow the Finley's night so that performers can simply do that and then watch the rest of the show for free? Also Jeff I do feel sorry for your fellow performers who it seems you may have partly let down by "taking a personal stance" when Stirling was asked to perform an excerpt of Sweet Charity at the Finleys. With regards to the BOCs issue I do hate the fact that you have to pay the fee to see the show. BUT I do understand why the ITA, like many other amateur clubs, are selling their tickets in this way. Obviously they are hoping to sell tickets to a wider group of people who may not normally attend such a night because they aren't a member of a club. And having been invovled on a committee back in the days when the clubs had to sell the tickets etc it is definitely easier through BOCs. Anyway these are just my opinions and my opinions alone. I am very much looking forward to the Community Theatre 'Night of Nights'!

Moderation or removal

It has been moderated down, not removed. It is still there for people to view. Obviously certain individuals did not feel that the posting was in good taste. I was not one of them as I have not actually moderated anything in this thread (for a change).

If you change your settings for comments to Best of the Best (because the options appear to work in reverse - something I am sure is being looked into) then you will find that the posting will appear again. At least that is how it works for me. I have that setting as default now and see all postings, regardless of moderation.

OK then Stinger - a VERY thin shoe-string!!

And in reply to Alex who suggested that maybe the ITA should raise the cost of entering for the Finley Award, well we did so last year and one of the first comments I heard was "what do they do for the money?"

re: Comps

What exactly is the point of the Finley's? I don't see the point..... It's a fund-raiser, yes but don't we do theatre just because we love theatre? Do we really need to have an awards night??? Sorry for the obvious question but in my home town there are a few theatre companies and they just do it because they do it. They don't have awards nights or anything even closely resembling it. They do have the competitions for one act plays, etc but not a "Finley's". Also Alex, the excerpts are voluntary. If a performer chooses to do it, then they can. If they are not available or choose not to, then surely that is a personal thing? There were other reasons behind Jeff not doing the excerpt but one of the deciding factors was definitely paying for the tickets. And as it turned out there were 6 people who didn't do the excerpt either....

Clearing the air

Correct me if I am wrong, but we are not talking about Comp-etitions, but Comp-lementary tickets. Just incase that was the direction you were heading.

The finlay's are not a competition but a recognition of theatrical services. The Academy Awards is not a competition but a recognition of cinematic services. We all do theatre because we love it, and if we truely love, then we should all want to see any of us getting recognition for their efforts.

The winning of a Finley does not immediately imply that person A was better than person B. Theatre is always going to be very subjective and therefore we should simply take an awards ceremony such as the Finleys as a celebration of theatre in general.

Now I have said my peace, I shall disappear from this thread again.

Interesting, Na. Thanks. Maybe WA people should feel lucky that their effots are being recognised at all. ~ Tari The Writer is a child forever listening at the keyhole of the adult world.

So true - it's very hard to

So true - it's very hard to get recognised in Melbourne outside of festivals, funding, or government-run awards. I can't speak to the amateur area of course, but I'm not aware of anything for amateur groups. Reply

In reply to Alex Mclennan - no-one was let down by my decision not to perform in Rhythm Of Life. All cast members were asked if they would like to perform. Quite a few had other commitments and/or did not wish to take part. This decision on numbers was made in plenty of time, and the rest of the cast had a couple of rehearsals in which to redo the chory to fill the spaces left. So don't feel sorry for anyone, as it is unnecessary. I have NEVER let a fellow performer down by failing to turn up, or being late, and I am insulted by your insinuation.
Jodie HansenMon, 14 Jan 2008, 09:13 pm

Comp-lementary...

Hi Jeff, No that wasn't the direction I was heading - sorry, I went off on a tangent about awards and got sidetracked into describing what my hometown did.....
Walter PlingeMon, 14 Jan 2008, 10:16 pm

Re: Comps

Fundraiser!! I'm not sure where that idea came from. Also, depending on your role in a given performance choosing not to take part / be involved with the excerpt COULD put the pressure on. Someone would need to step up and learn the role OR the director needs to choose another scene/excerpt to present or forego (is that how you spell that?) the opportunity to perform in front of the WA Theatre community. Tohrukun, I was not aware of any other reasons for Jeff not being involved or aware of the fact that 6 other people from the cast didn't take part so I do apologise to Jeff for jumping to conclusions. BUT I do know some of the people who performed in that same production and it was made clear to me that it had been a difficult time rejigging the choreography etc for the Finley performance. My point was simply, if choosing not to do an excerpt purely because you had to pay to see the show then maybe that was possibly letting some people down. And I will say it again this is only my opinion! Lastly if one doesn't wish to pay and see the show then simply do the performance and go home or sit out in the Green Room and watch it on the TV (if there is one) as I believe there was at Penhros.

Finley's

Hey Tari, There are similar awards in Newcastle called the CONDA's (City of Newcastle Drama Awards), Victoria have the Guild Awards, and I think Canberra have a similar "award" system as well. The biggest difference I have noticed with the Finley and the CONDA's, is that you have to enter your productions in for the Finley's, whereas the CONDA's all productions in the Newcastle region are considered for awards. They also have both professional and non professional categories. I know 2007, the CONDA judges saw something between 80 and 90 shows. 'Don't let the Bastards get you down' See ya on Sat Cal
