I am 15 years old and love acting, but have not been able to do much of it as of yet. I am wondering how I could get an acting role or if there were any spots available. I live in NSW, it would need to be within the state. Can any one help?

Re: any kind of job

OK! this is just gettin pathetic... pleading for jobs so you can play for your poor puppy to go to the vet? I mean come on!! Let me tell you something little kiddies, the chances of being discovered on this website is so low that you'd have better luck busking. The only way to get an acting job, is to audition!! Go to the audition pages, get involved in anything that is available for you!! The more plays and experience you have, the sooner it will be that you get a name for yourself, and perhaps will get hold of an agent...who will then perhaps get you auditions to more exclusive plays or even television shows. But PLEASE stop posting desperates pleas on this site... If you really wanna get somewhere in this career you need to really work at it...at the moment you are just hoping someone will find YOU....you need to find THEM! So get out there and do it!

Oi...i cant believe how many there are? : /

Theres no way Im goin through all them posts...but please tell me im not the first to tell these kids this?

Re: 13 old need acting job

Well Andrew and Dilan no one is making you read these messages or do you do it for your own satisfaction? Because it's sad, only being on a website to insult others who are having a go. Or did you guys post messages similar to mine? Because if thats the case you are both complete hypocrites or losers. Pick one guys, because those are the only things you two will ever be.

Re: acting career

My dream job is to be an actor but I don't know what to do to get my dream started.
Walter PlingeSat, 15 Jan 2005, 08:18 am

U could make a dream come true

I have had the love of acting since I was young. Now I want to persue it. I have been in about 10 plays. I have written and produced 1. I know I want to be an actress B/c It's in my heart. Not to brag but, I maintaind a B average while directing my first play intitled "Good Time Syled Christmas" I wouldn't need any classes b/c I have already took them. I am in the 7th grade i am 12 yrs old most people say I look about 15. I am 5'4 i weigh 180lbs. I have dark brown hair and a carmel complextion. I don't want to be an actress b/c of the fame or fortune I want to be an actress b/c it's my heart and I want to give my family the better things in life not living from paycheck to pay check. I do all kinds of acting serious and humorous. As a matter of a fact I won the county competition of Forensics in both humorous and serious poetry. I am not one of those spoiled people who has to have things there way nor will i ever turn into one of them.

Just Doing It

I am way way past 15yo, and am currently MD of a home grown production of Pinocchio at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre. There is a cast of about 30 people, over half of which are in the age group of the people posting requests for acting jobs on this site (12-18). Some of them I have now worked with for three shows. They have been doing three rehearsals a week for 3 months, performed choreography by some one who danced professionally in Sydney, been directed by someone who has directed Community Theatre for 20 years, sung songs by some of the great Musical Theatre composers, made friends, and been able to stand on a stage and be applauded by over 700 people and then signed autographs in the foyer. In other words, they've had the full theatrical experience. I know who I'd want in the next show, and it isn't people who are sitting at home on the internet.
NaFri, 21 Jan 2005, 02:53 pm

Re: Just Doing It

I think that's a very unfair comment. Many professional techs, actors, directors, designers (and whoever else is out there) check websites. They check them for information, sometimes for jobs, and sometimes just to talk to people in the same area. True, there seem to be more people posting who aren't professional, but that's simply because they don't have as much day-to-day contact with professionals.

I myself don't like the constant posting, but am also sick of the lack of communication between the emerging artists and the professionals.

You hire people based on their skills, their enthusiasm and their dedication, not by how much time they spend on the internet.
And if you are not hiring people based on their skills, but based on their amount of internet time, then that should be counted as discrimination (unless, of course, if they don't come to rehearsals/performance because they are on the net...in which case, you probably shouldn't hire them... but that's lack of dedication isn't it?)

I have been in the professional world of theatre for three years now, and find it incredibly necessary to check websites, especially Artshub, and this site also contains a lot of important ads and info that I sometimes need. I run my own theatre company, and sometimes I need to find a particular item. Last year I needed a hat with a propellor on it, posted a query on this site, and Craig Williams was nice enough to lend one to me - despite our being in different states.

And by the way, doing a show like that may give a person a 'full theatrical experience' but it doesn't guarantee a long-term career in the industry. Perserverence, hard work, and a lot of job hunting does. I have applied for many succesful theatre jobs through this site and others. So have my friends. Information about grants and funding can also be found on the net.

A while ago, I would have complained about all these posts (and they still do annoy me), but now I defend them because at least this provides conversation and advice. If you were finding it difficult, wouldn't you want to ask someone, especially when it seems there is no one to ask?

The nature of the majority of these posts don't provoke conversation or advice from me because its not the intent of the postings on this thread. They're merely statements which give nothing to back to me. So usually I ignore them.

I think if you troll through all these threads, professionals such as Mr Williams have already given their 2 cents and advice in regards to these issues. Unfortunately, due to the nature of these forums - they quickly disappear into the digital ether of information. Perhaps Mr Malcolm could look at alternative forum software that might make things easier to navigate?

If you're talking about creating professional and sustaining careers then these people should be joining website services such as AT2 or SHOWCAST. Professional producers, casting consultants and directors will usually refer to these websites for talent.

Re: Just Doing It

I agree. I have repeatedly mentioned on this site (and other theatre sites) about the necessity of providing an 'answer' page, so that there aren't so many posts and so that we don't have to constantly answer them.

As for joining those websites, I also agree. But like many of the aspiring people posting on this site, you first have to know they exist. I spend a lot of my time searching on the net, and over the years have collected a lot of sites that I refer to. But it has taken time, and quite often I stumble onto something by chance or because someone else has told me about it.

And you know, maybe the reason there is no conversation (as I was trying to point out before) is because professionals have gotten so tired of answering these questions. It is not a one-sided thing, conversation. And if we could just take a few minutes of our time to explain politely why these statements should not be made so constantly, we could be providing a necessary step to guiding people in the right direction. The posts may be statements, but aren't they really showing us how this industry works, and how we can make it better?

And there's so much theatre out there that is self-created, co-op and fringe. This site is an excellent way of finding out what's happening in both the amateur and the professional world. (Not that this is the best site for finding professional work, but that is not the point...)

Can't we all stop bitching and complaining about this and just help each other instead?

Re: Just Doing It

I don't believe Bruce was really condemning people simply for being on the internet....otherwise I'd probably feel justifiably miffed! I see his point, rather, as comparing those who actively seek opportunities to work and learn (this can include finding information on websites) with those who simply say 'I am here. I want to act. Give me what I want." As Crispy says, this approach is generally useless because it generates no sympathy from the readers here. (....btw Crispy, I reckon my 2 cents worth is now up in the several hundreds of dollars worth!).

As you said, na, it would be great if we were all helping each other...and I think you'll find there is actually a good deal of evidence of this in this very thread, as well as many others. But you can understand why tolerance levels are low when the approaches are SO repetitive and not at all thought through...and when the answers ARE here in this thread but seem to fall on deaf ears. I rarely respond to this particular thread anymore because it now takes several minutes to load!

The suggestion of a new help page is a good one, and has been considered before....I'm sure it will eventuate but it's largely a matter of finding the time, energy and manpower to do it.

Cheers
Craig

Re: Just Doing It

Yes that was my point entirely. I'm not even sure any of these young people want to make a living out of acting, but if they do, I am positive these experiences will not do them any harm. Interestingly, three of the cast of these shows (all under the age of 19) have been accepted into WAAPA, two into the Certificate Course, and one into the Theatre Management course. All of them have been involved in many Community Theatre productions over a number of years, which once again, I am sure has assisted in giving them a solid grounding to work on.

Is it me or is it suspicious that Claude McNamara has replied to some of the 'seeking work' posts with - 'I'm interested in hiring you, send a pic.'
Not only does he mention two separate movies he's casting for (ok, not that unusual, but who has money for two movies, and posts here instead of going through an agent), but he makes no mention of sending a CV as well as a pic. I would have thought he would be interested in a biog if he's casting roles.

Re: 14 yr old female actor looking for work

Hi Tegan. I'm Kia Groom and i'm looking for a job, too :) it doesn't even have to be acting, y'know, i'd take a nice paying job at subway or nightfill at my local supermarket.

Thing is, i'm as likely to get employed by Coles posting in this thread as I am to get someone emailing me and saying "Yo, Kia, we need you to be in X Y and Z production, when are you available?"

There's a section on this site for auditions - watch it, keep an eye out, and if there looks like being a production coming up which needs someone of your age etc etc, call and book an audition. It's not hard. Also, you might want to check out www.stormthestage.com - it's awhile off yet, but it doesn't hurt to get prepared early for STS 2005 :) I know i'm already looking at monologues.

You get nothing for nothing, unfortunately, so if the sum total of your passion is sitting behind a computer and posting on a theatre site in the vain hope someone will hand you employment on a silver platter well...

Good luck and all that jazz - as you can see by the eight zillion other posts of this vain, it's a tough business even at Perth-local-theatre level. But hey, if you get off your ass and put yourself out there, you never know, do you?
