Virgin Director
Thursday 6 April 2006
Well, it’s finally happened. I now get to express the repressed feeling of Directing. For years I have acted under the direction of others. Over time, I began to develop my own ideas and thoughts about directing, which lead to frequent struggles to curb my tongue! Now I have the chance to see how I really cut it as a director.
Just today, I have been advised that my application to direct a one act production has been accepted. Great, now I have to arrange an audition date, a rehearsal schedule (which will no doubt be revised several times before the show goes up), picking a cast and possibly organising a crew.
Who every said a director had it easy? Did anyone? If they did, they had better not meet me.
What I find interesting is that the reality of all this organising has not struck me until now, several minutes after I have gotten over the euphoria and being told “You can do it.” I have though about it before of course, it just seems more daunting now.
I have been so looking forward to this that I even dabbled a little with ‘poster’ concepts. I have a couple of iconic images which I can use but beyond that, a script which has been read and highlighted so many times I think the pages are still wet with ink and my fingers permanently stained black. Beyond that, I have a few visual concepts and possible approaches.
Now I need bodies, cast, crew, support team, cheerleader squad, tea lady, masseuse, etc. Finding them will be fun, interesting, challenging, frustrating … take your pick. I’ll be finding out for real all too soon, and I’ll keep anyone who’s interested posted as I go along. Can an backseat director really make the grade? You’ll see.
Found this interesting or want to follow it through, then vote for it.
