Raising the Bars (again)

stinger

Tuesday 28 November 2006

From time to time, I am tempted to comment on the amenity of bar facilities around the theatres, which may lead some to ask "what do you go to the theatre for - the entertainment or the grog?" To which I rapidly reply "Depends on the standard of either". Seriously, what I really like is the chance to discuss the show with friends and other participants over a tipple or two immediately afterwards. Last night for example, I went to Harbour Theatre. It has no bar to speak of. If you fancy a drink before, after or at interval (apart from the traditional welcome woobla), you have to go to nearby Clancy's Fish Pub and pay about $5 for a standard anything. So you don't go to Harbour for your thirst and you probably don't hang around to meet the performers afterwards. Last week, I went to the Old Mill. It has a very nice new little bar area - just right for a cosy after-show chinwag and chug. But guess what? It closes after interval - possibly taking a leaf out of the book of the professional theatres (including the university ones). Everyone feels obliged to go straight home. Boring! My recent visits to Marloo, Garrick and Roleystone have been more satisfying in this respect . Keep it up, people! This Thursday, I'm headed for Melville and my all-time favourite, the 'Riches Bar' - so I trust they maintain their customary high standard for after-show conviviality. See you there! Cheers,
