THE KARAOKE TWIST

Daniel Kershaw

Friday 20 October 2006

What would you say about a man who financed his own play, just so he could put it on? Crazy? Stupid? Really, really stupid? Well, that’s the story of John Grimshaw’s, “The Karaoke Twist”, of which I am apart of. This man, whose passion is writing, became disheartened by the number of rejections from amateur theatres around the state. Although it does not surprise me, I am deeply saddened that theatre companies are not giving local writers a go in their full length season, or at the very least reading the bloody thing. How hard is it to read a play? If it is awful, you are allowed to STOP reading, but the very fact you gave it a chance means a lot. No company wanted anything to do with the unknown playwrite, so they refused to produce his work, even before reading the material. He has finally secured a season at the Old Mill. All I can say is THANK YOU NORMA DAVIS. You’re a blessing to theatre. So, I’m asking everyone out there in cyber land to come and support new works from Perth writers. Frankly, I’m sick of watching the same sort of plays each year. No companies (except a few) seem to want to take a financial and reputable risk. I’m not saying to completely disregard getting bums on the seats, so that the theatre can continually function. What I am saying is perhaps, once in every season, companies should think about putting something different on. If it bombs, it bombs. So what! I am sure most companies have more than enough dosh in their coffins to allow one failure once in a while. So come watch it! I’m in it! Ok, maybe that’s not an incentive. However, please support new writers. A Lad in Sane Productions Presents The Karaoke Twist. Written and Directed by John Grimshaw.
