GODSPELL is one of the biggest off-Broadway and Broadway successes of all time and has been performed in nearly every corner of the globe. It was the first big musical success for a then relatively unknown Broadway composer Stephen Schwartz and he won 2 Grammys for the cast album.
Schwartz went on to write other successful musicals such as PIPPIN & THE CHILDREN OF EDEN. He also collaborated with composer Alan Menken on the scores for the Disney animated features POCAHONTAS, for which he received two Academy Awards and another Grammy, and THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME. He also provided songs for DreamWorks' first animated feature, THE PRINCE OF EGYPT, for which he won another Academy Award for the song "When You Believe". His latest musical WICKED is a smash hit all around the world and recently opened in Melbourne.
The structure of the musical is that of a series of parables, taken primarily from the Gospel of Matthew. The songs from the show take us through a diverse range of musical styles including pop, folk rock, vaudeville and gospel. The song 'Day by Day' was a pop hit in the US and made it to the number 1 spot here in Australia.
