For more information, contact Rachael on marketing@statementevents.com.au PLAY SYNOPSIS – ‘A DAY IN COURT’ The play takes place in Glanville which is a fictitious suburb of the Eastern suburbs in Sydney. It is set in the present time. The play opens with the very efficient Court Officer Anna SWYTHE appearing on stage and explains the workings of the court to the audience (PUBLIC GALLERY) In the following scene the play begins to flow where we see Anna SWYTHE, the not so bright Judy O'HARA (SHORTHAND WRITER) and the Police Prosecutor Sharon PETERS discussing the day's work. During the discussion they are joined by the romanticist Police Sergeant Brian BROTHER who is carrying a mysterious brown paper bag. As a result of this meeting we are treated to a very unusual day in court. The Magistrate Jan LIBERTY presides over the day's hearings. Jan is a spinster who resides with her mother and has a slight hearing defect. During the course of the proceedings we meet a number of unfortunate defendants who appear in court on various charges. The loveable rogue Bill RAFTER is seated in the audience and calls out comments which eventually end up with him being arrested and escorted from the court. Most of the defendants are represented by Jaylene BOWDEN the Public Solicitor with hilarious results. Jaylene lost her husband some years ago and has a huge drinking problem. As the day progresses a battle of wits emerges between LIBERTY and PETERS. There can only be one winner. Who will prevail? LIBERTY or PETERS? A DAY IN COURT delves into the private lives of the court officials. Personalities are not what they first seem to be. Overall A DAY IN COURT contains laughter, sadness, drama and has an unexpected twist at the end. 'A Day in Court' has been shown at many theatres across NSW and is looking for expressions of interest for theatrical companies and directors to put the play on.
