Does WA have a future?
Sunday 22 June 2008
This is adressed to anyone, in WA, involved on any level with the ARTS in this state.
Did anyone read the two large articles in Saturday's West Australian on page 16 regarding the future of WA's major arts companies?
Am I the only one outraged and angered by these articles? What they say and what they predict?
I'm a university student. I study performance and when I read articles like this I get angry because it seems to me that my opportunity to work in a field I am studying is becoming less and less as each day passes. WA's arts societies, companies, groups, trainers, everyone is struggling so much more then before. And there doesn't seem much hope in sight for anyone in the industry.
If you'd like to read the articles you can find them here:
The articles cover the problems arising (and finally being adressed)about WA's lack of venues - for performance, rehearsal, storage and office space - for some of WA's major arts comanies such as WA Ballet, WASO, WA Opera, etc. These companies are downgrading themselves or are simply being hindered in growth because of the lack of venues in which they can reside.
Skadada Circus is one of these. Their current resdidence (the Len Fletchers Sports Pavillion in North Perth) is being demolished in July and they are then left without a base and as a result nowhere to train their performers and then as a result are considering cancelling world tours (or at elast putting them on hold). And many other companies are in the same bottle here.
And all this because of lack of venues! Rent is astronomical anywhere in Perth right now. These companies are looking to the suburbs where they can at least store their props, sets, costumes etc and possibly even rehearse and train.
It's disgusting and it's making me more and more angry every time I hear it. So I'm putting this out there. I believe we need to make people aware of this stuff. Adress it on any level. Is a public demonstration out of the question? Am I just reacting on anger? Or should we at least consider a way to make our voices heard that is perhaps a little more influencial?
