Casting around for crew

It's been genuinely exciting to have to add an extra evening of auditions to accommodate the interest of nearly fifty people looking to audition for Cosi and I can honestly say I've been having a ball at the auditions.

But we're still struggling to fill some key off-stage roles.

While GRADS has a reputation for quality productions, often the performances belie the struggle the company faces trying to get them on. A tiny pool of members turn their hands to all manner of tasks. I know many other companies rely on a few members to do much of the work, but we're talking a very few here; very, very few. Like count them on one or barely two hands at most.

While my own passion is directing, in the last four years I've been much more frequently seen building or painting sets, designing posters, helping out with publicity and even treading the boards. Occasionally all four at the same time.

:-)

Personally, I find it's a vital part of my understanding of this artform that I regularly work in other areas of theatre. It's also my way of ensuring that the opportunities that have been provided for me over the years continue to be available to others.

My spin? GRADS' struggle equates to some great opportunities for enterprising and enthusiastic people with a backstage bent to take on a range of roles in a beautifully equipped venue.

The Dolphin Theatre is a great venue with some sweet facilities, including one of only a few full height fly-towers in the state, but it's expensive to use if you lack the crew to take advantage of the flash features.

I know some of the people auditioning may be interested in helping out in other ways. I won't be able to cast all of the fifty odd people auditioning, but I hope some of those I'm not able to cast may consider throwing their support behind other aspects of the production.

But maybe there are some others that might be interesting joiningwhat is shaping up to be a great production? Respond to this post, drop me a line, give me a call!
