Virgin Director - The Rising Curtain

Labrug

Thursday 17 August 2006

Well, night 1 down and three more to go...... How did it go? Not too bad.

Apart from the usual sort of problems (slow sound queues, couple of fluffed lines, you know) it went very well. It is particularly rewarding when member of the audience make a bee-line for the cast to personally comment on their performance.

While not a full-house (while these days rarely happens for opening night) it was substantial and that was gratifying. One of my personal favourite scenes, which I will not describe (you'll just have to come and see the show - apologies to intrigued )eastern state readers) got just the type of reaction I was hoping for. Superb ;-)

The whole experience for me has been highly enjoyable and is certainly something I would consider doing again. I am aware that I have been very fortunate to have such a strong cast who have really got along with each other and created a fantastic team spirit.

One thing, it is so very different to being an actor in the show. There is an nervous exhilaration when you are about to walk onstage. As the director,  those nerves were not the same. And then I changed my hat and became the Assistant Stage Manager. Suddenly I was bustling around getting things ready, I didn't have time to get nervous. Then the show was on, and I was trying hard to not be the director and listen too closely to the show. It was the casts job and not mine as soon as the curtain opened. The nerves didn't really hit until after the show - "What would people think?" etc.....

Honestly, I think the show is great, and that is trying to be as unbiased as I can be.

Here's to the last three nights.
