Moth
Wednesday 18 July 2012
"Sometimes there’s no scarier place to be than inside your own mind…"
Sebastian is a terminally unpopular fifteen-year-old suburban kid, with an overactive imagination and an obsession with anime and death. His only friend Claryssa is an emo Wiccan art-freak barely one rung higher than Sebastian on the social ladder.
What starts as just another night drinking down at the cricket nets soon gives way to an ecstatic vision that leaves Sebastian unconscious and Claryssa missing without explanation. The next morning, he wakes up with a mysterious moth in a jar by his bed, a burning passion to save the souls of all humankind and a desperate need to reach Claryssa. Sebastian spirals into a breathless ride of schizophrenic delusion and religious mania, living life at a feverish pitch.
Mental illness. Religious zeal. Love. Moth is a highly charged, rapid-fire, funny and moving new Australian play. It is a thrilling new work for audiences aged 15 years and over.
“This is exquisite theatre: in my view one of the most accomplished new plays of the past few years, here given a superbly restrained and devastatingly powerful production.” Theatrenotes
