Berry Drama Group to stage A Streetcar Named Desire The Berry Drama Group are set to stage A Streetcar Named Desire at the Berry School of Arts for four evening performances only, from October 26 – 29. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the Drama Critic’s Award, “Streetcar” ranks as one of the greatest dramas in the history of the theatre. In 1947, Broadway’s hottest young writer, Tennessee Williams brought a new play to Broadway. It was an exotic, erotic, passionate and dramatic story with performances so raw they changed the American approach to acting for generations to come. A Streetcar Named Desire, went on to become a major sensation on Broadway and in Hollywood. Set in the steamy French Quarter of New Orleans, we follow the nervous adventures of a faded Southern belle, Blanche DuBois. This journey of delicate indiscretions, lost dreams and brutish actions leads Blanche to madness, aided by her handsome brother-in-law, Stanley Kowalski. This intense, emotional work set in1940’s New Orleans, was recently staged by the Sydney Theatre Company starring Cate Blanchet as Blanche Dubois and Joel Edgerton as Stanley Kowalski, and was described by the STC as ‘a compelling and sensuous play featuring some of the most memorable characters in theatrical history, [with] the battle between Blanche and Stanley an embodiment of nothing less than the battle between tradition and progress itself.’ Williamson’s play delves deep, exploring the gamut of the human experience from loss, sadness and death, to sexuality, desire, illusion and hope - and still resonates strongly with audiences 64 years since its first production in 1947. Actors were drawn from as far as Nowra and Wollongong to participate in this production, and have been working intensely to bring to the Berry School of Arts an exceptional rendition of this play, which will be interjected with live music during performance.
