Natural Light Headshots VS Studio Headshots

As an Actor & a Photographer I have been following the trend of Actors Headshots for a while and observing what Australian Agents & Casting Directors often look for. Here are some pointers for both Actor and Photographer alike: - Melbourne and Sydney based Casting Directors in particular now prefer naturally lit (colour) Actors Headshots as it ensures that the person who walks into the Casting room looks like the headshot they submitted. - Make sure that your eyes are fully in focus and that they feel like a central focus point of your main headshot. The age old addage "the eyes are the window to the soul" is still as important as ever and this is exactly what Casting directors are looking for when they sift through all their candidates photos. - Often having a variety of headshots is the key to capturing either an Agent or Casting Directors attention. Try and have at least 2-3 natural shots with at least 2 Studio shots that could be appropriate for Commercial use eg. TV Commercials or Catalogues. - If you are going to get Studio Headshots then make sure you either check with your Agent or if you are a freelance actor then check different Actors forums for advice on who to choose. - Studio Headshots will always have a relatively manufactured quality about them and whilst this can be useful for Commercial use you need to decide what type of work you really want to get. If you are aiming for more film and television work then it is more appropriate to get natural lighting headshots as it is closer to how you will come up on screen. This is particularly appropriate for Australian Films where budgets are lower than in the US and a lot of natural lighting is used.
