It was formed in 1935 as The Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Victoria to foster and promote the works of W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, as well as other authors of light opera. We have presented light operas in Melbourne and Victoria every year, through war, depression, and global warming, ever since. This year we commemorate the 100th anniversary of W.S. Gilbert’s heroic death in 1911, at his home in Grim’s Dyke, near London, attempting to save a maiden in distress. It will be staged before we leave at the sumptuous IAN ROACH HALL at SCOTCH COLLEGE. Conducted by JOHN FERGUSON and directed by ROBERT RAY this will be a musical and dramatic delight, which many regard at the best G&S opera.
