It was formed in 1935 as The Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Victoria to foster and promote the works of W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, as well as other authors of light opera. We have presented light operas in Melbourne and Victoria every year, through war, depression, and global warming, ever since. This year we commemorate the 100th anniversary of W.S. Gilbert’s heroic death in 1911, at his home in Grim’s Dyke, near London, attempting to save a maiden in distress. Celebrate his collaboration with Arthur Sullivan by subscribing to our 2011 Season, with a generous discount. By subscribing you will also receive a complimentary copy of our magazine TANTANTARA! four times a year, which is full of informative articles on G&S and other matters of light operatic entertainment. Alternatively, you may book separately for each production. THE GONDOLIERS NEW PRODUCTION Libretto by W.S. GILBERT Music by ARTHUR SULLIVAN Stage Direction by JAMES WRIGHT Musical Direction by ALEXANDER COLDING-SMITH The Gondoliers was Gilbert & Sullivan’s last major success. Set in picturesque Venice in the late 19th Century on the island of Barataria, it tells the topsy-turvy tale of the young Prince of Barataria who is left in the foster care of a gondolier, who mixes him up with his own son. The boys grow up as happy gondoliers and take a pretty wife each, before they are told that one of them is now the King! Confusion follows when it is revealed that the Prince was already married in infancy! This is Sullivan’s sunniest music, and Gilbert created a wealth of funny and original characters.
