Symphony No.5
Schubert, master of the lyrical idea, may have written no orchestral work more purely beautiful than the Fifth Symphony. Writer Geoffrey Crankshaw described it as ‘a jewel of infinite grace,’ and as such it provides a fitting companion to Mozart's sublime concerto. It was during a rehearsal of the last movement of this concerto that Beethoven exclaimed to a fellow-pianist and composer: ‘Cramer! Cramer! You and I will never be able to do anything like that!’ Taking as his models ideas drawn from Schoenberg, Stravinsky and Warner Bros. cartoons, John Adams had created a uniquely effervescent musical landscape in his Chamber Symphony.
