Navigating
By Katherine Thomson
SYNOPSIS
35 years ago, the small Australian seaside town of Dunbar was rocked when a picnic party aboard chartered fishing boat 'Harmony' came to grief with the loss of 28 young lives. This had a profound effect on the community and particularly teenage Beatrice (“Bea”) Samson, whose skipper father took the blame and consequently his own life, shattering those of his family. But was it really his fault?
Now, Bea and younger sister Isola have returned to Dunbar after a prolonged absence, to find the village in the throes of a ‘bid’ to become the site of a proposed new privately-owned prison, which of course means more jobs, business and other benefits for the community. Bea’s contemporaries are now civic leaders, actively engaged in the ‘bid’ and the last thing they want is someone raking over the dark history of the place, perhaps pricking some surviving consciences and dragging a skeleton or two out of the watery closet.
Added to this, an anonymous whistle-blower provides Bea, in her capacity as a conscientious council employee, with evidence of corruption associated with the ‘bid’. Bea tries to report the matter to the authorities through the correct channels, only to find herself running into brick walls at every turn.
A battle of wits ensues, during which Bea becomes more isolated and desperate as one by one, those about her let her down and her unseen enemies do their best to destroy her credibility, her sanity and finally her life. In the event, timely support arrives from an unexpected quarter, however the audient is left to their own imagination as to what fate ultimately befalls Bea and her crusade.
