Virgin Director - The Auditions
Thursday 4 May 2006
Well, here we go. It's now really happening, or at least the key is in and the engine running. I now have my heart slowly rising up my throat as I begin to contemplate the task ahead of me.
UPDATED 13 May 2006 - Auditions will be held on the 27th May 2006. The three shows will audition in sequence - Awakenings at 1pm, Quake (mine) at 2pm and The Lesson at 3pm.
More details can be found here - http://www.garricktheatre.asn.au/default.asp?page=story&id=53
So now I am busily preparing what I need for the Auditions and arranging costume requirements, props, and so forth so that I may have everything ready well in advance giving me plenty of time to (hopefully) discover anything I have missed.
Now I can hear the question being asked (because it has actually been asked of me several times) what is the play about, who wrote, what are you looking for....
Well here's the run down. The play is called 'Quake' by Anthony Booth. It was published about 1978 but it could be set in virtually any time period. The dialogue has a very moden feel to it.
The cast is made of five women, and while Mr Booth does provide a brief description and age range for the cast being between thirty to forty-five with one possibly older than that, I am opening the range a bit by looking for about early-mid 20s to early 40s. Certain characters can be played younger than others and introduce a chronological 'pecking' order which gets challenged through the course of the play.
The play itself is about how these 5 women deal with an Earthquake which destroys their car, kills their driver and leave them stranded at an agricultural station somewhere in South America.
For the audition, I would request (although by no means complusory) a short monologue of anywhere between half a minute to 2 mintues (no longer) and that all involved should be prepared to read segments from the script with other participants.
Hopefully I will be able to cast the play on the spot, but if not, I shall make calls as quickly as possible. Then I just have to develop a schedule.
