Need Help Finding Musical Theatre Solo and a Monologue
Sunday 13 June 2010
I recently entered the "Storm the Stage" competition. I was caught at short notice just before entries closed. I have entered the competitions 2 parts (Musical Theatre and Monologue). However now find myself short on musical theatre solo, and one monologue (eep).
I have spent innumerable hours (okay maybe like 12) on youtube and googling various monologue databases looking for potential performances however I have realised that without knowledge of the texts it is hard to kinda pick or get a feel for the pieces. It is also hard to find them in general as the majority of what is "findable" online is public domain when I have been leaning more towards contemporary pieces which generally speaking aren't public domain. Living in a rather rural area it is hard to get my hands on any large variety of texts to scour the old fashioned way however I could easily enough find copies if I knew what I was looking for.
Soo I was just wondering if any of you beautiful, lovely, wonderful, brilliantly knowledgeable people (please note the sucking up :D) could offer me some assistance.
Okay so I won't leave you hanging a bit of background.
-Storm the stage rules say I have to perform a musical theatre solo and a monologue the site says less than 5 minutes in length however I read somewhere else that its between 3 and 5 minutes.
Musical Theatre:
+Never received any form of training ever, I've been told I am a reasonably good singer just my ear is very untrained and I suffer from sever lack of technique (but I'm working on that).
+Not entirely sure on my range as it varies from day to day, I normally get put in with the basses because I have the best control of my voice in the deep notes (apparently) but bass doesn't really feel natural to me.
+I suffer when things get soft. I have reasonable control when I'm projecting and get good clarity etc. but if I have to sing softly I kinda fall down a little. (also being worked on for my current role in the school musical)
+My strongest point that seems to have given me a bit more success in the musicals is apparently my stage presence is really good, so something that can be sold with character would be great!
Monologue:
+Have looked so long for a monologue for things other than this and found them impossible to find. (Just an aside that one really).
+I don't want a "story telling monologue" but something in the here and now, I just feel they have more impact, but if you have other suggestions feel free to throw them at me with as much force as is deemed necessary.
+I want something with a bit of range of emotion and depth a large part of the Storm the Stage focus seems to be the ability to sum up some kind of story in the monologue rather than just showing a snippet, so something with a bit of 3 dimensionality.
+Although I mentioned contemporary earlier, I'm also not afraid of Shakespeare, I love Shakespeare! I just haven't had the exposure to it I would like to have had. I'm standing at Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Nights Dream, The Merchant of Venice (don't really remember it well I was young when I saw it) and Macbeth (can I say that on a theatre website... is it still technically a theatre? It may be a little difficult to run around the website 3 times.)
+Style/genre wise I fit pretty much anywhere, however I've always had a thing for the darker side of things, black comedy or just plain black. But I also have a soft spot for the absurd and fun, but if I was to do it for Storm it would have to have some depth or variety to it.
I hope thats enough to work with... sorry I couldn't give more details, oh I'm male 17 going on 18, eyes change colour currently a greeny browny yellowy thing I dunno, brown hair, 175cm tall, slight build, Good with physicality and throwing myself around um, yeah thats about it. Not that much of that matters.
But yes, any help would be greatly appreciated :D.
P.S. Sorry if this is my second post on this topic... I made one earlier... but it seems to have disappeared. Maybe I hit preview rather than submit. Let me know if you find it hiding in some dark corner.
