Report on Censorship

Labrug

Monday 30 April 2007

The MEAA have released a report on the recent introduction of Sedition, Censorship and other associated laws by the Australian Government. It is an interesting read. While the focus is more to do with Freedom of the Press and Journalism, it's relevance is still pertinant.

There have been numerous attempts to supress the voice of the press, most of which have been thwarted thankfully. It highlights the support that exists for freedom of expression while also explaining the attempts to abuse the rights of those who inform us every day. Some of the policies currently in practise are frightening to say the least;

  • Broader powers of the ASIO and ABCC (Australian Building and Construction Commissioner)
  • The Organisational Restructure of the ABC introducing a higher level of 'Governmetn Control'
  • Over-reactive prosecution attempts of note-able TV personalities
  • And more
