CRY HAVOC - Blue Room Theatre, Northbridge - 22/10/09 - 07/11/09
Friday 16 October 2009
"And Caesar's spirit, raging for revenge
With Ate by his side come hot from hell
And in these confines with a monarch's voice
Cry Havoc and let slip the dogs of war" - Mark Antony
(from Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare)
Local writer/director Grant Watson has taken the story of Julius Caesar and given it a contemporary spin by setting it the West Wing of the White House, Washington DC.
My character, James Christian (Jim) Freeman, pin-up boy of the Republican Party, is the incumbent President of the USA. With the end of his second term in office in sight, he is searching for ways to build his legacy. Somewhat naively, he allows himself to be manipulated by unscrupulous operators, for which he and the GOP pay a heavy price.
There are not a lot of laughs in this play (not me, but some would say Grant simply has no sense of humour whatsoever), but I guarantee you will not be allowed to nod off. Apart from the gripping narrative, it also promises outstanding performances from some of Perth's best (no, I don't include myself in that either).
The rehearsal period has been demanding and draining, but enjoyable and rewarding nonetheless. I find myself among old friends - Grant, Sonia and Peter from Grads - Kingsley, Amy and Michael from Arena - and new ones, Mia and Clinton, both of whose past work I have admired from the auditorium at the Old Mill .
Hope to see you all there. Hang around afterwards and I'll buy you a drink at the bar!
Cheers,
PeteN
