An isolated country estate is eastern Victoria is the setting for this examination of a wealthy business family in crisis. The patriarch has called his wife and three children together to test their love and loyalty before dividing up his vast financial empire, but they find themselves embroiled in deception, treachery and collusion, revealing a family locked together in both love and hate.
This robust Australian play is funny, devastatingly incisive and at all times riveting as it cuts through the notion of family and lays bare the rituals and conventions of familial relationships.
Characters (3 male, 2 Female)
John Gleason (Mid 60s) A businessman and politician with designs on becoming Party Leader and eventually Prime Minister, he believes personal emotion is a weakness to be exploited in others and eradicated in oneself. Conniving, deceitful, manipulative and a master of the politician's clever tongue, he lies with charm, intelligence and conviction.
Eloise (Late 50s) His deluded wife - self-controlled, poised and intent on maintaining domestic harmony, she is initially unaware of the conflicts within her family. She finally confronts them, with devastating results.
Celia (Late 30s/Early 40s) His rebellious married daughter - a strong, passionate yet desperate woman, capable of a high level of emotional intensity.
Raymond (Mid-late 30s) His shifty elder son, a share broker. Hypocritical, wily and treacherous. An expert at deception and manipulative power games.
Michael (Early -mid 30s) His rather unworldly youngest son, a dreamer who takes "refuge in despair" and hides his strengths beneath a witty surface.
