I don't want much... merely an ensemble of selfless, disciplined, intelligent, sensitive, and courageous actors.
This production will be intense and spare.
Ray Lawler's play is an Australian classic... it is to Australian theatre what "Death of a Salesman" is to American theatre.
Every role is a corker... not a dud among them:
REUBEN "ROO" WEBBER, 41.
A large man. Fundamental, honest, gentle by nature, but troubled of late.
OLIVE LEECH, 39.
Emotionally very fragile, possibly even neurotic. Has an emotional age far less than her actual one.
BARNEY IBBOT, 40.
Small-ish. A fading casanova, and a larrakin. Wiry and deceptive, but fundamentally decent.
PEARL CUNNINGHAM, 39.
A solid woman. Fallen on hard times, but maintains a strong set of morals.
EMMA LEECH, 68.
A stubborn old duffer with a short fuse, but wiser than we first give her credit for.
KATHERINE "BUBBA" RYAN, 22.
A forthright, honest, and enthusiastic young lady. Polite, but with a charming brashness.
JOHNNIE DOWD, 25.
Tall, handsome, athletic, and confident... everything that Roo used to be.
Auditionees are asked to prepare a contemporary monologue (preferably from an Australian play), and be prepared to read a scene from
Doll.
