Alarms & Excursions - more plays than one
by Michael Frayn
An evening of short and not so short comic plays takes a wry look at our
relationship with modern day gadgets and gizmos designed to make our lives
easier... or do they?
Four old friends sit down for a quiet evening together. But they are
harassed by various bells, sirens, buzzers, warblers, beepers and cheepers,
all trying to warn them of something. What are these electronic voices
trying to tell them? Can they understand the mysterious disasters before
disaster strikes? It's a race against time - because there are seven more
plays and twenty more characters still to come before the evening is
through, plus a lot more strange noises - and increasingly desperate calls
from eleven separate pay phones...
"Alarms and Excursions" sees Frayn return in sparkling comic form as he
takes a wry look at our increasingly desperate reliance on technology. In
the opening play, "Alarms", a cosy dinner party collapses in mayhem as the
gadgets turn on their masters. In the final play, "Immobiles" the numerous
phones and phone messages lead to total confusion and increasing
desperation. And there are six more hilarious plays in between...
"This is simply breathtaking, comfortingly and appallingly funny. Frayn is
writing about life and living, and how living with its props and artificial
needs, keeps getting in the way of life." The Sunday Times
---
I'll be looking for four versatile actors, two male, two female. Each will
play a variety of roles. Age ranges about 30 to 50.
