ParnassusÂ’ Den presents a reading of Jialiang Jiang, a play by Avi Michael. Looking for a place where new Australian scripts can be brought to life by professional actors reading them to an audience? A place where the punters present are able to give their collective feedback face-to-face to the writer? This is ParnassusÂ’ Den (PD).

About the play: Abandoning friends and businesses he established in the Western Suburbs, self-made fashion wholesaler Kricko Jiang grabs an opportunity to realise his dreams of being a famous jeweller. Moving his family to the East, Kricko tries to court the wealthy and important while his son, Jialiang, enjoys the life of pomp and glamour that his father builds for image. Failing to woo Eastern Suburbs society and further business opportunities, Kricko is financially ruined, forcing the family back to the poverty they saw as migrants living in the West. Jialiang, convinced his new friends will help, decides to go out on his own – all seems stable until Kricko leaves.

About PD: Over the past decade, PD has positioned itself at the frontier of new Australian writing for performance, encouraging the development of new Australian scripts for film, theatre, TV and radio. Over 500 readings later PD, has grown to become the ‘First Word Of Mouth’, where new Australian writing for performance is discovered.

How it works: PD selects readers from an ensemble of approximately 80 professional actors. The author attends the reading. Following the reading, the audience comments on the script – what works, what doesn’t – giving the writer invaluable feedback to help develop their work. Many scripts have since been produced on stage, screen and airwaves locally, nationally and internationally.

If you are an aspiring playwright, PD gives you the chance to take your script to the next level. If you are a producer, director, actor or dramaturge, this is a great opportunity to get involved in some of the latest works emerging in Australia film, theatre, television and radio.

Entry to all PD readings costs $8 or $5 for members. Membership costs $20 per annum. Tickets can be purchased at the door. All readings start at 7:30pm sharp. For more information check out www.parnassusden.org.au
