Greg and Kate have moved to Manhattan after twenty-two years of child-raising in the suburbs. Greg's career as a financial trader is winding down, while Kate's career, as a public school English teacher, is beginning to offer her more opportunities. Greg brings home a dog he found in the park- or that has found him- bearing only the name "Sylvia" on her name tag. Street smart and perky, Sylvia becomes a major bone of contention between husband and wife. She offers Greg an escape from the frustrations of this job and the unknowns of middle age. To Kate, Sylvia becomes a rival for affection. And Sylvia thinks Kate just doesn't understand the relationship between man and dog.

Cast required:
SYLVIA: a stray dog played by an actress. 20s-early 30s. A very physical part. Actress needs to look beyond the obvious "cuteness" of the dog. This dog is street smart!
GREG: 40s. Financial trader. At career and personal crossroads. Loyal and loving but withdrawals himself to the world he shares only with Sylvia.
KATE: 40s. Greg's wife. English teacher. Brisk, certain of herself but resents Sylvia and the affect she has on her husband. Actress not to play her as "villainess" but must find softer side of character.
TOM, PHYLLIS AND LESLIE: To be played by the same actor. Male. 30s. Tom (fellow dog walker); Phyllis ( Kate's friend, prone to drink) and Leslie (Marriage counsellor but very edgy). These parts are comic gems and provide a great acting opportunity for the right actor.
