make-up can do the rest. However North American accents will be essential
Contrary to its name, this play is a comedy. It concerns three New York Jewish widows who, together, visit the graves of their husbands once a month. For straight- laced Doris it is the highlight of her life. Level headed Ida thinks they are going too often and, much as she loved her husband, feels it is time they all moved on. Lucille, looking like mutton dressed as lamb, goes to the cemetery along with the others primarily as she is on the hunt for a rich boyfriend. To her chagrin, it is Ida who meets an attractive widower, Sam, who is and has been IdaÂ’s admirer for some time. As they grow closer the other two disapprove, Doris because she is so narrow minded, Lucille because she is jealous and this causes division among the three close friends. Some of their quick fire cross talk is hilarious.
There is a fourth small part for another woman, Mildred, in the same age group.
The comedy mixes beautifully with pathos, creating a rich mixture of emotions.
