SYNOPSIS
SUMMER OF THE SAW
by Paul Andrew
Copyright2005
Director:: Bruce Langdon (Melbourne Writers Theatre)
FEB 2-4 2006
Synopsis
Afternoon tea for the slightly eccentric Saywell
Family is not what it seems. Thirtysomething Andrew -
the prodigal Saywell son returns to his hometown
Toowoomba, the heart of Queensland's Darling Downs. With the help
of his parents, a touch of Johnny Cash and a damn fine
cuppa he picks up the pieces after the end of a
three year relationship. As one door closes,
another opens but not without Andrew sharing a few
home truths about modern day gay relationships in the
spectre of Crystal Meth.
Background Information
SUMMER OF THE SAW is a slightly surreal moodpiece, a little
melancholic with some twists of wicked humour. Leonard Saywell is
the father, a retired builder with a passion for
Johnny Cash. Leonard is a little hard on hearing, when
he chooses. Irene Saywell is the yummy mummy with
silver hair, Irene can hold a tune and makes delicious
chocolate crackles. Irene has eyes like a hawk and
radar ears, nothing slips by her senses. Andrew is
approaching 40, and after his relationship breakup
pursues his passion for writing. He has some deep dark
secrets to share with his family. During afternoon tea
one hot summer arternoon, the truth comes out.
Character Information
Leonard Saywell
71 years
Salt of the earth seventysomething who is as fit as a
fiddle, slightly cheeky and a hint of eccentricity.
Irene Saywell
70 years
Graceful seventysomething, a little bohemian "in her
day", loves a good sing even if she cant always hit
the correct notes, highly intuitive and very cheeky.
Andrew Saywell
35 years
Late thirtysomething, tall natural into beaches, yoga
and writing. On the brink of a seachange and dealing
with the grief from his three year gay relationship
Andrew finds inspiration in his family and great
warmth to assuage his pain. He is a truthseeker,
articulate, a great observationalist and extremely
cheeky- the Saywell cheeky gene has found its
strongest host in Andrew.

MEDIA RELEASE
MIDSUMMA FESTIVAL PROUDLY PRESENTS:
BOYFRIENDS FROM HELL!!
BY TRANSMISSION THEATRE CO.
“Praise be to God, eight fresh and original writers
capture their very unusual tales of tainted lovers,
disastrous dates and love gone wrong!”
Midsumma sets to sizzle this summer with Boyfriends
from Hell! ItÂ’s the title of a new show comprising
eight short plays written by Melbourne WriterÂ’s which
include; Paul Andrew, Anthony Carne, Travis Dejonk,
Clinton Dybing, Troy Gurr, Tim Hunter (the Age), David
Knox (Seriously, Pet Shop Boys Discography, Kylie
Minogue musical; “I should be so lucky” and upcoming
Pet Shop Boys musical;” Fabulous”) and Kevin McGreal
(ShakespereÂ’s Boys, Jerker, Bob and Blanche and
Fore-play seasons @ Vic Arts centre)
“Even if you’re not a theatre enthusiast, this show
will delight in illustrating the wonderful world of
dysfunction, bitterness and vengeance!” says producer/
writer Kevin McGreal, “Everyone makes their own
Midsumma Festival. This year, mine was going to be
fun, pumping with creative energy and people. I wanted
a show that takes on a theme as diverse as its
audience and a testament to the wonderful experiences/
memories the Midsumma Festival has given many of us in
the past”.
We wanted a show based on a theme we can all
experience together that will unlock different things
for different people. Boyfriends from Hell, has an
adventurous feel to it because of the diverse creative
energy each piece has. “It was clear that everyone
involved with this show from the writers, actors to
the backstage crew, that the ideas and themes of this
project resonated with each of them,” McGreal says, “I
invited writers whoÂ’s work I had admired because it
was imaginative and spoke an individual uniqueness
because these are stories based on a theme by artists
with voices of humanity and harmony that have come
together.”
The idea grew from an article Troy Gurr (editor of
MCV) wrote about queer theatre becoming one-
dimensional one joke sketches about bums and dicks and
everything directly related! Boyfriends from Hell!!,
is a crazy collage of connected stories from various
writers. It is a show that has the ability to turn
something mundane into something magical. “We want to
show audiences the breadth of queer theatre making in
Melbourne and give audiences a chance to see a level
of diversity, interest, curiosity and real engagement,
that above anything says a lot about our city; our
home,” McGreal says, “so come with us and make believe
we can travel to eternity.”
