If you are offended by strong language, drug use, skimpy or implied nudity, numerous sexual references and girls kissing on stage, this isn’t the play for you.
With the exception of the main character JB, actors will be expected to play about three roles each.
Due to contractual reasons, no scripts will be available before the audition. You will be asked to do a cold read at your audition using an excerpt that will be provided to you. You will be given time beforehand to review and prepare. We are looking at auditioning groups of four at a time.
If you feel you need more material to prepare, we suggest you read the novel He Died with a Felafel in His Hand by John Birmingham, which the play is based on. Try your local library (that’s where we found a copy). Under no circumstances do we recommend watching the film version. It is in no way an accurate representation of the book or play. Just DON’T. It’s 107 minutes of your life you’ll never get back.
If you are not familiar with Groovy Boots Theatre, we operate on a profit-share basis – what monies are left after all expenses have been met, it is then divided among the actors after the season has ended. You may have heard this referred to as a co-op.
We’ve done our best to give to a full rundown of the characters featured below. The ages are purely a suggestion – we gave up towards the end of the list – but essentially we’re looking for people to play characters that share-house with others. We reckon that gives us an age range of 18-40 for most parts.
You must be 18 at the time of the play’s performance (June 13 is opening night) because we are performing in a licensed venue (The Flying Scotsman’s Velvet Lounge, since you ask so nicely).
Performance dates are June 13, 15, 16, 20, 22, 23, 27 and 29 (Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays if you haven’t figured it out).
Auditions will be at the Old Mill Theatre, Mends Street, from 10am to 4pm, Saturday, March 23. If you’re interested in auditioning, shoot us an email at groovyboots@hotmail.com and we’ll tell you the best time to come along (we don’t want 50 people to come at 11am and then have no one until 3pm). Oh, and that email is best for any questions as well.
