One of the Master's earliest works this gem lay unappreciated until a recent revival by RADA which reawakened interest in this delightful comedy. George Brent and his wife Jennifer, a romantic novelist, separated when their two children were tiny. He made a new life among the 'horsey' set of rural England, she took the children to the Continent and brought them up in a bohemian atmosphere. Now, 17 or so years on, the children decide to return to England and meet their father.... and their stepmother.... and, needless to say, they have a plan....!!! Characters George Brent 40+. George is the former husband of Jennifer and current spouse of Cicely. He is father to Gerda and Sholto and has become part of the English 'hunting set'. Gerda 18. Gerda is the daughter of George and Jennifer and sister to Sholto. She is astute and a little cunning, with a likeable demeanour. Sholto 21. Sholto is the son of George and Jennifer and brother to Gerda. He is pleasant and charming. Jennifer 40+. Jennifer is the mother of Sholto and Gerda and Georges' first wife. She is a novelist who has emabraced the bohemian lifestyle and now resides on the Continent. Cicely 25+. Cicely is Georges' second wife. She is something of a social climber and engaged in a love affair with Rodney Masters. Priscilla Hartleberry 25+. Friend of Cicely and engaged in a flirtation with Claud, though she has a lover/husband in India. Often given to 'baby talking' and is quite gullible. Claud Eccles 25+. Part of the 'hunting set' and very keen on Priscilla. Julia Cragworthy 35+. Slightly more 'bolshy' than the other women in the group with a very brusque way of talking. Eustace Dabbit 40+. Eustace knew George and Jennifer when they were married. He is part of the 'hunting set' but doesn't partake in the sport himself. Sibyl Blaith / Maria (servant at the Villa) Sybil is part of George and Cicely's group. The role will double as that of the Italian maid, Maria, in Act III. Rodney Masters 25+. Part of the same social circle and lover of Cicely. Hiram J. Walkin / Huddle (Butler) Hiram J. Walkin is an American gentleman who has proposed to Jennifer on numerous occasions. This will double with the role of Huddle the butler in Acts I&II
