Jane Austen’s Emma
Dramatised and Directed by Vanessa Jensen
About the script:
In dramatising Emma, I have gone back to the original source – the novel; resulting in a dialogue heavy script. Therefore I require actors capable of learning great tracts of text faithfully and of bringing them to life through delivery more than action. The role of Emma is huge. She is on stage almost constantly and has pages upon pages of script to learn. The roles of Bess and Mary act as facilitators for moving the story along and moving the set! They gossip as they change the set in front of the audience. The roles of Miss Fairfax, Mrs Elton and Mr Churchill are only in Act Two, meaning less rehearsal calls to begin with.
About the audition:
The single best preparation for the audition is to read the novel. Extracts from the play will be made available the week prior to the audition. You may also be required to read from the script with another auditionee, and to improvise to demonstrate character. Mrs Augusta Elton (30s) Recently married, financially secure before her wedding. Confident, superior, bossy. Mr Henry Woodhouse (Late 50s) Emma’s father. Of a nervous and worried disposition. Mr George Knightley (38) The Woodhouses’ neighbour. Handsome, wealthy, intelligent. Mr Phillip Elton (30s) Local vicar. Attractive, charming, slightly shallow and smarmy.
