The Beast & The Beauty

This is THE FINAL audition notice for  a brand new play by David Stevens (Breaker Morant, The Sum of Us)

Old Mill Theatre is delighted to announce that we will be presenting the first production of a new play by playwright David Stevens The Beast and the Beauty is based on the age old story of Beauty & The Beast, but this time set in outback Australia in the late 1800's. Stevens has turned this classic fairy tale  of magic & enchantment on its' head, there is no evil spirit lifted, no dark curse removed... the Beast isn't a beast at all, just an ordinary man, horribly disfigured by the Australian nightmare..... bushfire.

The Beast of the title is Tom , who  as a baby survived a bush-fire that killed his parents and devastated the family property. Tom survives but is badly disfigured by his injuries. He inherites the Station and grows up there, isolated by his disfigurement and protected by the tight knit community. There is a succession of house keepers over the years, most of whom eventually cannot cope with his difigurement. Then, Belle arrives, the daughter of a profilgate Irishman and to her own surprise finds her place. She too is initially repelled by Tom's appearance but gradually comes to see the character of the man.

We have audition scenes available as well as a script. You can  down load the information including the audition pieces from the Old Mill web-site which is www.oldmilltheatre.com.au

For a PDF copy of the script contact me at davisrn@people.net.au

DATES: SATURDAY MARCH 3rd from  10 am  for as long as needed!

A time needs to be booked for an audition. If you have a CV and/or a photo, do not send it now, but please bring it along to your audition

TOM: mid twenties, a 'beaut bloke', the classic Australian outback man (think Joe Harmon (Bryan Brown in 'A Town like Alice' )Rugged, cheerful & optimistic, the glass of life is always half-full. This is a magnificent role, requiring a fine actor who is able to domiate the stage.

BELLE: Early twenties.  Belle is a young woman who is almost beaten down by life, and by her father. All of life is a challenge to her, which she meets head-on, even if it means taking on any and every man to survive - and ultimately to win.
She is constantly torn between her powerful sense of duty to her father and her eventual love for the disfigured Tom.

JACK: Aboriginal Stockman who works on Tom’s property.  Jack found Tom just after he'd been cooked in a bushfire, barely alive, and nursed him back to... a form of health.  Tom calls him 'Mum', as he pretty much raised him to run the station that was now his, since the fire had killed both his parents.

ANDY:The jackaroo on Tom's property. Trim, taught - and horny, he's a good worker but is ruled by his rampaging hormones.

VICAR: A thoroughly decent man, vicar in the small outback town of Tooraloo.  He was devastated by the decision he had to make some twenty-five years ago about the survival of the burnt Tom.
He may have made a bargain with God - take away my faith, but let the child live.

FINLAY: Reasonably successful outback storekeeper, realistic, fair and honest.  Like the Vicar he is haunted by the decision he had to make regarding Tom's survival and might do anything to justify that decision and have Tom achieve happiness.

IRENE:Finlay's wife and as decent as he is.  Salt of the earth, as you might expect, but with a fairly low opinion of the things some men do.

JESSIE: A tart with a heart of gold? Well, maybe. Basically, she is cheerful and irrepressible and, like so many, just struggling to survive in a sometimes hostile world.  She knows that she has power over men - but she always knows that power won't last and she'd better make hay while the sun shines.

STOCKMEN: A few hard-working station hands on Tom's sheep station, mostly good blokes.
There are several other minor roles that will be doubled by actors playing some of the parts above.

If the story grabs you... and one of the roles speaks to you... plus you’re willing to give 110% to this world premiers production...... then I'll look forward to seeing you at auditions!
