THE 39 STEPS : AUDITIONS
THE 39 STEPS adapted by Patrick Barlow from John Buchan’s 1915 novel and the Alfred Hitchcock film of the same name, will be HARBOUR THEATRE’S first production for 2012.
Winner of the 2007 Olivier Award and the What’s On Stage Award for “Best Comedy 2007” as well as numerous Tony Awards, the Broadway production finally closed in January 2010 after 771 performances which made it the longest running Broadway play in seven years.
The plays concept calls for the entirety of the 1935 adventure film to be performed nearly verbatim onstage, but with a cast of four. One actor plays the hero, Richard Hannay, an actress plays the three women with whom he has romantic entanglements and two other actors play every other character in the show : heroes, villains, men, women, children and even the occasional inanimate object. This often requires lightning fast changes and occasionally for them to play multiple characters at once. Thus the serious spy story is played mainly for laughs and is full of allusions to (and puns on the titles of) other Alfred Hitchcock films, including, Rear Window, Psycho and North by Northwest.
AUDITIONS WILL BE HELD AT THE THEATRE ON
26TH AND 27TH NOVEMBER COMMENCING @ 10AM.
Harbour Theatre is located in the Port Cineaste Building, 70 Adelaide St, Fremantle
(opp. Woolworths and next door to Fleet Cycles).
Season dates will be 8th to 24th March 2012 (incl).
CHARACTERS REQUIRED
RICHARD HANNAY – Male, aged 35 – 44
PAMELA/ANNABELLA/MARGARET – Female, 24 – 29
CLOWN 1 – Male, aged 35 - 48
CLOWN 2 - Male, aged 35 – 48
We will not necessarily have just 4 actors as the female and clown roles take on several challenging characterizations.
The female part will required varied characterisations in the 3 roles : no roles should appear to be the same. She, like the clowns, needs to mime, have physical dexterity and maintain sustained poses at all levels.
The clowns need to be very versatile in their characterisations, change voice tones and work on par with the strengths of other characters. There are great demands in these roles in timing. These roles are a great challenge and should not be undervalued.
All characters do not ham but rather perform shifting , stylised characterisations with strong choreographed movements .
