Martin is at the top of his game. Life couldn’t be better. He has just turned 50, been awarded architecture’s highest accolade, the Pritzker Prize, won a huge contract to design a ‘City of the Future’ and is happily married to the devoted Stevie. Together they have a 17 year old son, Billy, who is coming to terms with his homosexuality, with the loving support of his parents. His lifelong friend, Ross, arrives to film an interview about the recent successes in his life, but Martin seems distracted. His mind is wandering. Then he reveals to Ross the reason for his distraction. Martin is in love. Ross feels driven to reveal Martin’s infidelity to Stevie, and we witness the breakdown of their marriage, their family and their home, as Stevie and Billy try to come to grips with the enormity of Martin’s actions. The Goat is a play about the moral boundaries that society erects between what is, and what isn’t acceptable behaviour. How do we treat those who act outside the norm? The play is, in turns, shocking, confronting and very funny. Albee, most famous for Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? says, “Every civilisation sets quite arbitrary limits to its tolerances … It is my hope that people will think afresh about whether or not all the values they hold are valid.” “Leaves you with plenty to feel and think about…a brave, questioning play.” – New York Times. “As startling as it is satisfying…The dialog is fierce, often brutal, and laced with the blackest of humour.” – Associated Press. The Goat, or Who is Sylvia, contains frequent very strong language, adult themes and may be distressing to some people. Not suitable for children.
