Production details:
First two weeks of November, 2011, The Studio, Holden Street Theatres
Written by James Majur, directed by Tony Moore. The production will be a Co-operative, using an MEAA model. Primary funding is via a Carclew Youth Arts – Project and Development Grant, granted to James Majur the playwright.
The play is set in a village in the Sudan. The period is the present. High priority will be given to actors of African origin, however, if necessary a mixed race cast will be considered. Appropriate playing age for the characters is a high priority.
Roles available:
Mary, a young girl, still at school (playing age 14-18). She dreams of a future where she finishes her studies and can leave her village for a better life.
Baba Mary, her father (playing age early 30s up). He enjoys a drink or two. He wants money and to improve his standing in the village. He plans to marry Mary to the Chief, which will mean he gets a large dowry and a rise in status.
Mama Mary, her mother (playing age late 20s to early 30s). She encourages her daughter to dream of a better life...but ultimately she is powerless. A strong woman but held by the village tradition.
Chief, leader of the village (playing age mid 30s up, preference to the higher end of the age scale). He is an older man with many wives, very conscious of his status and the need to keep their traditional way of life going, even in modern times.
