CALL-OUT: THE BLUE ROOM THEATRE SUMMER NIGHTS, JAN – MAR 2012 - INCLUDING THE FRINGE WORLD FESTIVAL (25 JAN – 18 FEB)

Over the last three years The Blue Room Theatre Summer Nights has developed as a significant program of eclectic performance and development of artists and new work.

From 2012 Summer Nights will progress once more as The Blue Room Theatre’s participation in the FRINGE WORLD Festival, which in 2012 grows to become a full open-access fringe with venues across Perth and beyond. FRINGE WORLD Wonderland in the Perth Cultural Centre will be the central hub of the fringe, resulting in prime positioning for Summer Nights.

Summer Nights Upstairs
and Downstairs will provide opportunities for artists January - March, a time in the Perth artistic calendar when significant events like FRINGE WORLD and the Perth International Arts Festival are taking place. We aim to work collaboratively with such events and our neighbours where possible to ensure added value benefits and opportunities for artists; build awareness for Summer Nights; and develop year round audiences for The Blue Room Theatre.

Summer Nights Upstairs in 2012 will present production ready works as part of FRINGE WORLD, in both The Blue Room Theatre performance spaces and potentially the PICA performance space (subject to suitable submissions). These productions will need to be not only fringe worthy works that consider limited technical resources and quick turn-around times for shows, but also worthy of being placed in the most desirable theatre spaces located in the centre of the fringe.

Summer Nights Downstairs
will be dedicated to the continuing professional development of Perth artists and include a laboratory type program of masterclass workshops; GROUND FLOOR in collaboration with Stages; and provide in-kind support to developments selected for Early Stages.

Your acceptance into any of The Blue Room Theatre Summer Nights spots between 25 January and 18 February assures you a place in the hub program of the FRINGE WORLD Festival. As partner organizations, The Blue Room Theatre and PICA members who are accepted also get 50% off their fringe registration fee (more info available at fringeworld.com.au from July 2011).

PLEASE CLEARLY IDENTIFY WHICH OF THE PROGRAMS BELOW YOU ARE APPLYING FOR OR EXPRESSING INTEREST IN. PLEASE STATE, IN ORDER OF PREFERENCE, IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO HAVE ONE PROJECT CONSIDERED FOR MORE THAN ONE PROGRAM.
APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED WITHOUT BLUE ROOM THEATRE MEMBERSHIP.

Please contact Office & Front of House Manager Sally Martin to join or renew: sally@blueroom.org.au / 08 9227 7005.

CALL-OUT: SUMMER NIGHTS UPSTAIRS @ THE BLUE ROOM THEATRE

- FOR PRESENTATION READY WORKS

We are looking for performance-ready productions to take place in our 70 and 50 seat black box performance spaces and will consider all submissions from remounts to existing scripts and brand new works. We encourage applicants to think outside the box and outside the usual Blue Room Theatre Season criteria. For Summer Nights there is no limit to what will be considered (keeping in mind available resources).

Our 70 seat theatre will host the return of Barefaced Stories, the development of the new breed of Solo Spot – New Two (see call for expression of interest below), and other weekly performances. Apply for the 70 seat theatre if you have a show that could suit the once-a-week format.

So far no events have been programmed in our 50 seat theatre, allowing applications for more substantial consecutive night runs up to a maximum of 5 nights (Tues - Sat). This could be ideal for remounts or possibly shows touring interstate. Keep in mind:
•         You may be sharing the space with other shows
•         You will have tight bump-in and bump-out times and turn around between shows
•         You may have to work with a generic lighting rig shared with other shows

•         No technician will be supplied
•         The Blue Room Theatre provides only venue not cash support, however you will receive 90% of box office takings (excluding ticketing costs)

Apply for the 50 seat theatre if you have a show suitable for a 1-5 night season.

CALL-OUT: SUMMER NIGHTS @ PICA PERFORMANCE SPACE

– FOR EXCEPTIONAL PRESENTATION READY WORKS

In partnership with PICA we are seeking proposals for high quality, presentation ready works suitable for a season in PICA’s Performance Space during Summer Nights 2012.

Important to note:
•         Seasons will most likely be between one half and one full week
•         You may be sharing the space with other shows, possibly on the same night/day
•         You will have tight bump-in and bump-out times and turn around between shows
•         You may have to work with a generic lighting rig shared with other shows
•         A technician WILL be supplied
•         There will be performance space hire support from The Blue Room Theatre and PICA

•         Cash support MAY be offered – there may be an opportunity to negotiate fees or door splits with The Blue Room Theatre

Keeping in mind last year’s FRINGE WORLD presentation of Solo Shows at PICA and that your season may run alongside international acts, we are seeking the very best Perth has to offer for this space.

TO PRESENT A SHOW IN THE 70 SEAT OR 50 SEAT BLUE ROOM THEATRE SPACE OR PICA PERFORMANCE SPACE, EMAIL A ONE-PAGE OUTLINE OF YOUR PROPOSED PRODUCTION - INDICATING HOW MANY NIGHTS YOU WISH TO PRESENT AND YOUR PREFERRED PERFORMANCE SPACE to The Blue Room Theatre Producer Kerry O’Sullivan: kerry@blueroom.org.au by 5pm Thursday 21 July.

Support materials (synopses, script, CVs, design ideas etc) will be accepted but your application is not dependent on these materials. The Blue Room Theatre will assess all one-page outlines and contact applicants for more details should we be interested in your proposal.

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST: NEW TWO

- DEVISING WORKSHOPS FOR CO-CREATING/PERFORMER DUOS

Over four sessions theatre maker Jeffrey Jay Fowler will take pairs of performers/creators through a process designed to create a new short work for two. The producers of the highest quality works will be invited to present them during The Blue Room Theatre Summer Nights 2012 as part of FRINGE WORLD.

Jeffrey Jay will share devising methods he learnt from NIDA (where he studied Directing), his undergraduate degree in Contemporary Performance, and his own theatre making in Australia (including award winning shows Hope is the saddest and A history of drinking).

Participants must commit to a weekly three hour workshop for four weeks in October/November 2011 and be available to develop their work between workshops. Come with an idea for a show in mind, or prepared to start from scratch. Estimated total workshop cost for all four sessions is $100 per participant (TBC) or $200 per pair.

To register your Expression of Interest please email a brief CV for both performers/creators and a half page synopsis of the idea you would like to work on (though you can choose to generate your performance idea in the first workshop session) to: jeffreyjayfowler@gmail.com by 5pm Thursday 21 July.

Please note: this program, if successful, will replace the previous years’ Solo Spot and be produced by Jeffrey Jay Fowler in partnership with The Blue Room Theatre.

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST: BAREFACED STORIES

– FOR STORYTELLERS

Barefaced Stories will continue workshops in 2012 with Emmy Award-winning producer, writer (Ellen DeGeneres Show) and host of The Moth live shows in Los Angeles; Brian Finkelstein.

Following the sold-out season of Barefaced Stories in 2011 which developed into a regular monthly Storytelling night at The Bird in Northbridge, co-producers Andrea Gibbs and Kerry O’Sullivan are calling for new storytellers as well as those who participated in the 2011 Margot Leitman workshop series.

Similar to last year is the workshop series being offered to beginner storytellers – you do not have to be a performer to participate. Last year’s participants included lawyers, pro-wrestlers, comedians, IT specialists and mums. This is an introductory course that gives you the necessary skills to hone and craft a good story to be performed in Barefaced Stories.

There will also be an advanced course for those who participated in Margot Leitman’s workshops early this year to continue their professional development in Storytelling. It is a pre-requisite for this workshop that you have trained in the previous storytelling workshop series.

To register your Expression of Interest please email your contact details; a brief bio including any previous Storytelling experience; and why you would like to attend the course to: kerry@barefaced.com.au by 5pm Thursday 21 July.
Please note, there will be a fee charged for participation in these workshops.

CALL-OUT: EARLY STAGES

– FOR DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS

As part of The Blue Room Theatre’s ongoing commitment to the development of new work, if you have an idea to flesh-out and require some in-kind rehearsal space, you can apply for The Blue Room Theatre’s Early Stages.

There is NO performance outcome for this program. It is strictly for works in development that need rehearsal space. We will provide in-kind support for up to three new developments which start during Summer Nights and will also consider continued support throughout the rest of the year.

To apply, email a one-page outline of your idea and plans for development to: kerry@blueroom.org.au by 5pm Thursday 21 July.

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST: GROUND FLOOR, 31 JAN – 3 FEB

– FOR PLAYWRIGHTS

Stages WA and The Blue Room Theatre are seeking new and emerging writers for GROUND FLOOR; a five day intensive workshop program as part of The Blue Room Theatre’s Summer Nights Downstairs.

This in an opportunity for exceptional new playwrights to bring new work to be developed with high calibre dramaturges; read by professional actors; and culminate in a showing of selected scenes to invited industry guests.

This program will focus on the fundamentals of dramatic technique, giving new writers the skills to hone their strong creative vision to create a more polished work. The workshops will generate quality feedback for writers within a critically rigorous and creatively supportive environment.

While we are only seeking expressions of interest at this stage, when application dates are released you will need to submit a new work and participation fee, however this workshop program is heavily subsidized by Stages WA along with some financial and venue support from The Blue Room Theatre.

To register your Expression of Interest please email your contact details; a paragraph outlining your writing experience; and a brief synopsis of the play you would like to develop (including details of genre, form and cast size) to Stages WA Director Jansis O’Hanlon: director@stages.com.au by 5pm Thursday 21 July.
