THE PLAY Alabama, USA, 1880s. (Accents required for this production) Locked in a frightening, lonely world of silence and darkness since infancy, Helen Keller has never seen the sky, heard her mother’s voice or expressed her innermost feelings. Then Annie Sullivan, a 20 year-old teacher from Boston arrives. Having just recently regained her own sight, the no-nonsense Annie reaches out to Helen through the power of touch - the only tool they have in common - and leads her bold pupil on a miraculous journey from fear and isolation to happiness and light. This is a play full of passion and emotion, touches of comedy and great moments of drama. There are two amazing roles for young actresses, and a variety of character roles for performers of all ages. THE CHARACTERS HELEN KELLER (F teens) If you are, or can pass for, someone in their early to mid-teens, then this challenging role could be for you! She is blind, deaf and mute. Feral, violent, bold, curious, thirsting for contact and understanding. This is a very physical role and definitely unlike any character you’ve played before. ANNIE SULLIVAN (F 20s) The other lead character, Annie is headstrong, stubborn, determined and persistent. Passionate, yet seemingly cold. Haunted by a tragic past. Yet a woman ahead of her time. She never gives up on Helen. Could have an Irish accent. KATE KELLER (F 30s) Helen’s mother and second wife to the Captain. She is a devoted, indulgent mother, desperate to find a “cure” for Helen. She is tired, worn, constantly stressed, steeled in grief, forever hopeful. CAPTAIN ARTHUR KELLER (M 40s-50s) Head of the household. Formerly a Confederate officer in the Civil War, now a newspaper editor. Formal, staid, stern, authorative, yet he loves his wife very much and indulges her with Helen. JAMES KELLER (M 20s) Captain’s son and half-brother of Helen. An indolent, apathetic, opinionated young man. AUNT EV (F 40s, 50s +) The Captain’s Sister. A seemingly genteel spinster, but a forceful independent woman. VINEY (F any age) Household servant. A sassy woman with a very large personality. DOCTOR (M 40s, 50s +) The local physician. A gentle, caring man. ANAGNOS (M 30s, 40s, 50s +) Head of the Perkins Institute. Greek background. A stern, yet caring and generous teacher. BEATRICE, ALICE, LAURA (F teens) Blind girls at the Institute and friends of Annie. All high-spirited. MARTHA, MERCY (F teens) Farm worker’s children. Playmates of Helen - with somewhat forced tolerance. Some of the support roles will be doubled-up.
