Synopsis Susan (who initially calls herself Rita) becomes dissatisfied with the routine of her life. In an attempt to re-evaluate her inner self, she signs up for an Open University course in English Literature. The play opens as 'Rita' meets her tutor, Frank for the first time. Dr Frank Bryant is a middle-aged, bitter, alcoholic career academic who has taken on the tutorship to pay for his drink. While the two have an immediate and profound effect on one another, and their meeting brings positive changes to their personalities, Frank’s bitterness and cynicism return as he notices Susan beginning to adopt the pretensions of the University culture he despises. Educating Rita is somewhat funny, somewhat sad and extremely educational. If it doesn’t make you think about your own path in life, nothing will. Characters Susan – 20’s – female – Young Liverpudlian female in search of a new path in life. Cockney English Accent and somewhat refined English accent required. Dr Frank Bryant – 40’s to 50’s – Bitter career minded tutor who teaches Susan how to speak and behave – somewhat educated English accent required. Audition requirements Auditionees will be required to speak in accents. There will be approximately 20 minutes allocated to each audition whereby auditionees will be required to perform both warm and cold reads. As part of the schools education program performances will require a Q&A session after some shows. Auditionees must be confident to talk about their character to these students (Q&A practice sessions will also be held prior to opening)
