Synopsis:
Gypsy is based on the 1957 memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee. Based in America between the mid 1920’s to mid 1930’s, the story focuses on Gypsy Rose Lee’s mother, Rose, whose name has become synonymous with "the ultimate show business mother". Rose concentrates on her talented younger daughter June, leaving older, less talented Louise in her sisters shadow. When June tires of being controlled by her mother and runs away, Rose turns her attention to Louise. In the midst of the Great Depression where vaudeville shows are dying, Rose pushes Louise to become a stripper where she finds her talent and becomes Gypsy Rose Lee, the famous striptease artist.
Lead Roles:
Rose – 30 years+ in looks. Alto. Strong Acting skills and movement required (Dance not essential) Baby June - 7 to 10 years old in looks. Mezzo, Must be a strong dancer with Tap experience. Must also be very flexible for High kicks and splits.
Baby Louise - 9 to 12 years in looks. Mezzo/Alto singer. Strong acting skills needed. The character always dances slightly out of step but the girl playing this part must be able to dance.
Louise/Gypsy Rose Lee - 16 to 25 years in looks. Mezzo singer – needs versatility in voice to range from young and light for younger years to a belt for older years and finale. Strong acting skills required. Actress will most likely be 18 years or over to play this role and should have the ability to portray both awkward teen and the sophisticated woman she becomes as Gypsy Rose Lee. Minimum actual dance but must have very strong movement skills. Must also be comfortable with the character’s profession – stripping. The character is scantily clad in the final scene but never actually appears in the nude. Please bring leotard to audition in.
Dainty June - 16 to 25 years in looks. Mezzo/Alto singer, Strong dancing skills required. Physical flexibility to do the splits and high kicks is essential. Baton twirling would be a bonus but not essential.
Supporting Roles:
Herbie – 40 years + in looks. Baritone, Mild mannered character that requires movement skills (Dance not essential)
Tulsa - 16 to 25 years in looks. Tenor/High Baritone singer. Strong dancing skills (tap a bonus). Strong singer/actor – charming
Miss Mazeppa (Alto), Tessie Tura (belt), Miss Electra (belt) – 30 years+ These characters are Gutsy, confidant, experienced Strippers. Some dance experience is essential. Be prepared to wear revealing costumes.

Cigar – 40’s+ Man Burly Burlesque Manager
Renee – 20’s+ Female French speaking maid
Phil – 30’s+ Man Press Agent
Bougeron-Cochon – 20’s+ Male French Photographer for Vogue
Chorus:
Newsboys – 10 to 16 years in looks, Some dancing skills required Hollywood
Blondes/Showgirls - 18 – 30 years in looks. Mezzo singers. Must be excellent movers. Acting skills and comic reactions essential as they are hopeless wannabe's in one scene and the elite of show business in others. Must also be comfortable with the Showgirls' profession – stripping. The characters will be scantily clad in the final scene but never actually appear in the nude. Some parts are speaking lines.
Farm Boys (to include Yonkers, Angie, L.A.) - 16 to 25 years in looks. Tenor/High Baritone singers. Strong movement/dancing skills. Certain boys have speaking lines also.
