Great Expectations is a coming of age story that revolves around the life of one man, Pip. From the time he was 7 years old until he is in his late twenties, Pip shows us the important events in his life that shape who he became.
"In the little world in which children have their existence, there is nothing so finely perceived as injustice," Charles Dickens declares in "Great Expectations." He is not speaking merely of legal miscarriages, but more especially of injustices of the heart--injustices which endure to colour adulthood. With these, Dickens himself was well acquainted throughout much of his life. Yet he managed to transform years of humiliation into high art. Much of his personal history he crammed into "Great Expectations," written as a magazine serial in 1861, made into a memorable masterpiece of a movie--and then adapted for the stage by Robert Johanson. At its world premiere at the Paper Mill Playhouse New Jersey, audiences and critics cheered this new version of one of the greatest stories ever told. This gripping drama, replete with Dickens’ delightful humour and a parade of marvellous quirky characters, is a great introduction to audiences of all ages to a great work of literature.
