The producers of the musical Bronhill are launching a search for someone to play the key role of JUNE BRONHILL as a mature adult. The show is due to go onstage at the end of September at The Independent Theatre at Eumundi.
June Bronhill, who died at the beginning of the year, was an iconic Australian singer who took the world by storm.
After winning a major singing competition in Sydney – the Sun Aria Quest – the people of her home-town Broken Hill, raised the money for her to travel to London to begin her career. June was so grateful that she changed her professional singing name to Bronhill, derived from Broken Hill.
She joined the Saddler-Wells Opera Company and was an overnight sensation. She performed in opera, light opera, musicals and was known as the quintessential Merry Widow.
After many years in the UK she returned to Australia and delighted audiences with her performances. Sadly in her latter years she suffered from profound deafness, which brought her career to a close. One of her last public appearances was in the revival season of How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying, with the late Noel Ferrier.
Writer John Burls has teamed again with director David Berker to work on the musical. They’ve specialised in bringing the stories of Australian stars of the past to the notice of today’s audiences eg Nancy – the story of Brisbane born Nancy Brown-Arlen and The Firm – the story of JC Williamsons theatre empire.
Already cast as June Bronhill aged six is diminutive actor Georgia Lee Leslie with Ashlee McKinnon playing June through her teenage years. Ashlee is currently training in opera with the Queensland Conservatorium. Also cast in major roles are Jenny Bundy, Allan Royal and Tim Page, all fine singers.
Now comes the search for someone to be able to sing and play June Bronhill as a mature-aged adult. David Berker said “June was a short lady so ideally we’re looking for someone of similar stature but don’t let that deter anyone if they feel that they can sing works covering some opera, light opera and well-loved musicals. We definitely want to hear from them. This will be a challenging role and whoever plays it will be well and truly noticed”.
