Storm the Stage 2010 – ‘Back to Theatre’ and solo performances

On 2 December 2010, up to 20 young finalists from around Australia will showcase their talent in drama and musical theatre, performing solo at the Octagon Theatre, Perth Western Australia. The intimacy of the Octagon Theatre and the educational surrounds of the University of Western Australia ushers in a new direction for Rotary’s Storm the Stage project for young people between the ages of 16 to 19 years with a passion for drama and musical theatre.  With an emphasis on solo performances and a ‘back to theatre’ approach young people will receive guidance and feedback from professionals in theatre within a nurturing environment.

Registrations for Storm the Stage opened on 1 April 2010 and will close on 31 May. Entrants are encouraged to enter. Prizes of up to $10,000 will be awarded including workshops on performance and the theatre industry. Finalists will be accommodated in Perth at a tertiary college.

Storm the Stage is about preparing young people to perform solo in a theatrical and intimate environment and to receive feedback. Around Australia, participating States are encouraged to convene preliminary workshops as an option for entrants to attend to firstly gain knowledge to assist in the selection and delivery of their solo performance. Preliminary rounds are to be convened as heats and finals with an opportunity for young people to perform in community and local theatres. Collaborative arrangements are encouraged with local and State theatre groups and organisations.

In Western Australia, a collaborative and cooperative arrangement has been nurtured with Stirling Players Youth (SPY) theatre group to produce and manage the preliminary rounds and workshops. This is an exciting opportunity for young people with enthusiasm and passion for theatre to take responsibility and ownership of producing a theatrical event. Storm the Stage welcomes this opportunity in WA and looks forward to the production of the preliminary rounds.

For each finalist, Storm the Stage offers an exciting opportunity to work with the producer and lighting designer to design and have input into the lighting effects for their solo performance.  Musical theatre finalists will have an opportunity to work with a musical director and band and drama finalists with drama specialists.
