Set against social and political struggles in 19th century France, the fugitive Jean Valjean is mercilessly tracked by Javert, who is obsessed by the pursuit. Their sprawling saga takes us from the Parisian underworld, with all the colour of Dickensian London, to the excitement and high romance of the student revolution on the barricade. For more than two decades audiences have been thrilled and inspired by this wonderful musical, which is set to one of the most memorable and dramatic scores ever written.
