A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum

on Saturday January 23rd from 2 pm at the theatre.*

The season will run from April 9  to April 24th 2010

Inspired by the farces of the ancient Roman playwright Plautus (251-183 BC) this tells the story of the slave. Pseudolus and his attempts to win his freedom by helping his young master to win the girl of his dreams. The plot displays many elements of classic farce incluing much mistaken identities and satirical comments on social class!

The original Broadway run in 1962 won several Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best book.Since then it has enjoyed several Broadway and West End revivals, the latest being in 2009 at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Stratforn, Ontario. In 1966 the film version  starred Zero Mostel.

  • Philia- a virgin in the house of Marcus Lycus (Soprano 16-24)
  • Senex- a roman Senator (Bariton 45-75)
  • Marcus Lycus -a purveyor of courtesans (Baritone 45-650
  • Domina - wife to Senex (Mezzo 40-60)
  • Erronius - Senex's elderlry neighbour (Baritone 65 -85)
  • Gymnasie -A couressan from the house of Lycus, with whom Pseodolus falls in love
  • Miles Gloriosus - Captain in the Roman army, a braggart (Baritone 30-45)
  • Hysterium - Chief slve in the house of Senex Baritone 35-65)
  • Tintinabula -  abell-wearing courtesn in the house of Lycus
  • Vibrata - a wild courtesan in the house of Lycus
  • Geminae- Twin courtesans in the uof Lycus
  • Panacea - A courtesan in the house of Lycus
  • Proteans- the 'chorus' aged 16-35)

To audition please prepare a song from any musical that displays your vocal ability

Timeslots are 15mins but as we will also pair pro[le up to do a bit of reading  from the play please be prepared to stay for about an hour, and please arrive 15 mins early to fill in your personal details.
