Further information and script excerpts www.starlighttheatrecoop.com Season: June 11, 12, 13, 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, 27 at 8pm Matinee on June 27 at 2pm Synopsis: Terra Nova is a study of courage under adversity. Based upon the journals of Captain Robert Scott the play describes the heroic ordeal that he and his crew underwent in a race to reach the South Pole. Narrowly beaten by his rival Roald Amundsen, the team perished in unforgiving circumstances on their return to base. The play highlights the cultural and managerial differences between Scott and Amundsen. Scott’s young wife Kathleen questions his motives for his obsession and vows to protect their young son from such patriotic fervour. Further information and script excerpts www.starlighttheatrecoop.com CHARACTERS - CAPTAIN ROBERT FALCON SCOTT Age 43 Scott is determined, distant and socially inept. Scott will speak with a British accent. Needs to hold a tune. Will need to have his head cast. ROALD AMUNDSEN Age 40 Amundsen is strong, determined and highly organised. He is calculating and does not succumb to sentiment. Amundsen will need to speak with a Norwegian accent. KATHLEEN SCOTT Early 30’s Kathleen was a British sculptor who studied under and was later befriended by Rodin. She is strong, determined and creative. Kathleen was well connected, her contacts included Picasso, Isadora Duncan and Aleister Crowley. Kathleen’s relationship with Scott was strained. As a creative person, she could not understand Scott’s passion for the perilous life of an explorer. Kathleen will speak with a British accent. LIEUTENANT HENRY ROBERTSON BOWERS Age 29 (“Birdie”) Scott described Bowers as “a gallant and noble gentleman”. Bowers was to become one of Scott’s closest friends. Bowers was short and stout with red hair. He had a dry sense of humour and was dependable and unselfish. Bowers will speak with a British accent. Needs to hold a tune. Will need to have hair dyed red. CAPTAIN LAWRENCE OATES Age 31 (“Titus”) Oates is a soldier to the core. Oates will speak with a British accent. Needs to hold a tune. DR EDWARD ADRIAN WILSON Age 39 Scott described Wilson as “the finest character he had met” and was probably his closest companion. He was even tempered and dedicated to others. He was respected for his judgement and mediatory skills. Wilson will speak with a British accent. Needs to hold a tune. 1ST CLASS PETTY OFFICER EDGAR EVANS Age 36 (“Taffy”) Evans is described as a”huge bully necked, beefy character”, and a “beery womaniser” who was “running a bit to fat”. Evans was regarded for his resourcefulness and strength. Evans had cut his hand as the crew neared the South Pole. He was not to recover from this event deteriorating both physically and mentally. Evans will speak with a British accent. Needs to hold a tune.
